check out www.babybmw.net the 116i might just be a bit on the slow side.

That seems to be the general opinion, mind you it depends on what it'll be getting used for. The 1 series is relatively heavy with all that safety kit, air con etc, on a long run it might be tiring. That's just my opinion of course. |

I recently had a 116i as a loaner and it had been run in (about 7000
miles). It was noticeably better than the (brand new) 116i I had tried
previously. I think they open up a fair old bit when they've been run
in. However, I'd personally recommend the 118d if you can stretch to it.

I have had a Sydney Blue 116i Sport since last August. I have got used to the sports suspension and run flat tyres. I had a Lexus IS200 SE before and though it is a completely different car the BMW responds and compares well. Coming back from the gym today travelling along the M27 I soon had to bring my speed down to 70 as after a bit of acceleration I was doing 90 within a few secs. I spend a lot less on petrol/insurance and car tax and I can get the car into my garage. If you are referring to slow 1.6 models try the Nissan Bluebird( not that many would). I read about faults( on the baby bmw site )but I have not had any so far. I think one must bear in mind that on the baby bmw site owners are sending emails from all over the world. The car will obviously respond differently in sub zero temps such as Norway and Russia and high temps in Australia. Yes I am well pleased with my purchase.

I wasn't implying that the 116 was slow, far from it. I just meant that for long journeys the bigger engine would be more relaxing, especially up here when the nearest motorway is about 120 miles away and you're up and down the 'box a lot for the hills. I love all the engines in the 1 series, there's one there for everybody.

Gordie, you are 100% right there is an engine for everybody. I am now retired and do not do very long journeys. If I was and doing long trips on the motorway I would have a 2ltr model and would also look at the bigger engined diesel.

I traded in a 10 month old 320d Touring for mine, it was just too big for us. I was lucky and managed to get a dealer registered 120d that was 4 months old and 10 (ten) miles on the clock. It took away a bit of the HUGE depreciation I suffered with the 320. I love all the engines in the 1 series, I've driven them all and I can honestly say that they've all got a lot going for them.
