I've been considering an E34 or E32 as a replacement for my trusty E30 Touring & found a local dealer with a mid '94 730.

I was expecting the V8 but found it had the M30 - no bad thing as they're pretty unbreakable, especially with only 89k on the clock. Is the extra efficiency of the V8's (& 5 speed g/box) worth having in light of the Nicasil problems?

I was somewhat disappointed to find a poverty spec car (no leather, a/c or even obc!) although it did have cruise. It was plain black (not metallic) & had alloys that looked like those off an E36.

Condition was good except for a very poor finish to a repair on the rear n/s wing.

On driving it I was struck by 3 things. It didn't seem that quick, the gear change was incredibly smooth (much better than my 635's) & the sport mode wouldn't switch in. The g/box didn't have the 3 position switch as on my 635 but the economy/sport/winter switch as found on the E36.

The asking price is £2495 which seems very steep for such a basic car even allowing for the low mileage. Since the whole point of a 7-series is to waft around in luxury then a basic 7 seems to offer nothing over an equivalent E34 (I don't need the extra back seat space).

Any guidance from the 7-series experts?

IMHO, it's a shed and not to be touched with a barge pole.

If you can afford £2500, you should be able to buy a good 1995 740i auto, that's worth having with all the toys.

Visit the Autotrader website and also Ebay, there are loads of cars about, just look at a few and select on condition and SERVICE HISTORY.

Nicasil shouldn't be a problem as so many cars had free short engines from BM;

From the casting no's on the block it's possible to establish whether it's Nicasil or the later and better Alusil.

740i virgin and happy with it.
Blissfully happy in France

Exactly!

I don't think it's a shed - far from it. The car is in excellent condition inside & out (apart from the top of the rear wing), it's just too pricey and/or under-specced.

If the price was right I could live with the performance. A 2nd hand leather interior would lift it considerably but that would still leave it without a/c.

Strangely, it didn't feel that big a car either. Not much bigger than my E34 or A6 as I recall.

The fact that the gearchange was so much smoother than my 635 has got me wondering though!

A 735SE (M30) is much much better. You should be able to find a minter at that price though you could have a long search. Do not buy.

And just to confirm, this months Total BMW has just come out with a buying guide on the M30 engined E32.

Top whack for a loaded 735SE with under 100k is £1500. They say don't buy a cloth trimmed 730 for this price!

I hope that 730 takes root at that dealer.

Now, being that they're so cheap - anyone know if the cruise from a 735 will fit my 635 ok?

No, you need the specific Highline system - stalk
from an E28 but the later type motor. I'm not sure if
the E28 535i system will work.

E32's are worth nothing now. That black 730i is
worth £1000 absolute tops. £1500 for the best 735i
in the world is spot on when you can buy a decent
E38 for £2500-3000.
