Topic: A no smoking forum? Posted: 15-February-2006 at 08:35 |
"The Commons decided by a margin of 200 to impose a ban on smoking in all
enclosed public spaces." Well, im guessing this is a public forum hosted on a rack mounted
server so I guess that's classed as an enclosed space..... whatever next...a no pissing zone in the swimming pool?

Aah relax. A smoking ban in all enclosed workplaces has been in effect here for over two years. Many people objected to it claiming it was infringing on their rights etc. However, it has turned out to be hugely welcome and given rise to a new practice called smirting or smoking and flirting. Seemingly (being married I wouldn't know) but standing outside the boozer is a great way to score. Also many pubs have installed heated covered areas outside and it tends to be nicer than sitting indoors.
However, Im still expecting Nigel to come on here giving out about it!

LOL....
Even Jeremy Clarkson said he supported a ban because he want's to quit and it would help him. He said he was tired of feeling knackered after climbing up the stairs in his house.

So what's your problem?
I go to the pub regularly and don't enjoy breathing other peoples second hand smoke.

Ahhhh - do you remember the "old-days" (cue violins, soft lighting and sepia effects!)
when the pubs had seperate Public (for the proper men) & Lounge (for .... other people!) bars - and if you were lucky a Smoking Bar - just for the Real men!
Cigarettes were cheap - and recommended by your doctor!
Those were the days .............
no namby pamby PC ***p in back then....... in the 90's!

LOL. I remember when I first quit, a couple of lads I knew told me that I was a girlie and that real men smoked.......Biggest load of Money Funning macho Bullpoo I've ever heard
You should talk to my Grandad about the 'Good old days'. He's 93 and has always said thet the 'good old days' never exisited except in people rose tinted memories.
Cigarette smoke contains carcinogens, a lot of carconigens. It doesn't matter wherether you are actually smoking the cigarette or not, if you breath in any of that smoke you are being exposed to those carcinogens.
Put that in you pipe and smoke it!

I must agree with Peter on this. The pubs are a lot nicer and if you want to smoke you just pop outside. Its not as bad as you might think and I haven't met anyone outside who was complaining about it. Also as I said, it is the in-place for people to be - honestly!

I can think of a few places where this is a big problem if you can't smoke in the pub, and have to go outside the front (lots of town pubs have no gardens) you will get arrested as you are not allowed to drink on the street!
Looks like we need personalised umbrellas (a-la del boy) to reserve your pint on the bar!

Pubs and nightclubs here often allow you to go out the back for a smoke. I think it really works well. The only negative feedback was that once the air was free from smoke it became apparent how much of a smell there was from BO and farts!

I'm a fairly heavy smoker, and even I have to admit that I prefer going out since the ban came in over here. And, as Killian said, there's a sense of camaraderie (sc?) amongst the smokers outside. My local pub has managed to put in a special smoking room, which has a big window so you can see everyone else in the pub!
I also find that I'm smoking less on nights out. Some pubs have special "reserved - I'm gone for a fag" signs that you put on your pint so that noone robs it or your seat!
Nearly 2 years since it came in here, and here we all were saying "it'll never work"!. All in all, it's a great success.
EDIT: forgot to mention, it's a great place to meet people (that's where I met my current girlfriend!)

Can't see it being a huge problem....since having kids I go outside the house to smoke and pull the car over in a layby for a smoke. Never felt comfortable smoking in restaurants.
Having said that at the risk of getting flamed its another 'feelgood' directive from the Blair camp designed to win votes and keep 'commoners' happy-look we're here helping you.
Distracts us from the increasing roadside ATM army, troops getting caught up in US-paranoia led wars, topics on immigration and their complete and utter inability to sort the real problems of crime, paedophiles etc.

In the summer who cares if you have to go outside, it's nice and warm and sunny anyway My local still has the seperate lounge and public bars and has made the lounge non smoking and the public smoking. The upside for me being a smoker is that the pool table is on the public side

It works in California and that where I saw/experinced it first before it happened in Ireland and the best thing is that the next day your clothes, hair and skin don't smell like an ashtray, so stop worrying about it the pubs won't loose any business and its for the better

I work in a bar at weekends & my clothes stink of stale fag smoke when they get washed the next day & as Peter has pointed out why should i breath other folks smoke ?. A total ban is on the way up here in Scotland on 26th March & it is the best thing I've heard in a long time .

Ha-Ha - I remember when I went on holiday to Hawaii, and changed planes at San-Fransico - "No smoking in the Airport sir, you'll have to go outside"!
So out to the "Side-walk", to the designated "Smoking-Zone" - a little area in the middle of the rest of the normal side-walk.
Right by all the American, gas-guzzling, auomobiles, pumping out their carcinogenic fumes!
Oh yes, stopping smoking indoors will really save lifes - not!
