If the stick is just loose in all directions, it sounds as if the entire selector mechanism has come adrift at some point along its travel. If it isn't visible, then it likely as not will be in the gearbox itself. It will likely be something small and fiddly, but if it's inside the box it becomes a pain in the wotsit.

best get it to a gearbox specialist with a good. rep. Westyorkshire
transmissions in Bradford is local and good to me. but I have no idea
where you are. I would get it looked at first. Unlikely to want a whole
new box. but the work is best done by someone who knows the score.
Was the gearbox A1 before the loss of function? |

Hey thanks, correct, nothing is happening inside the (manual) gearbox and the external linkage is fine, is it expensive to fix or should i just exchange boxes? |

when you say you've checked the gear linkage, do you mean when you
waggle the lever from in the car the linkage is moving around and the
"lack of resistance" is coming from inside the gear box?
If so then you you've got a gearbox out job (easier than it sounds as its a longditudinally mounted engine and box so can be slipped off the block. sounds like an internal linkage as sheard or a cotter pin or circlip has come astray. at the risk of sounding daft, this is a manual box, right? |
