Words like Rocking Horse Poo and Hens Teeth sping to mind.

All the rest of the E38 range share a common petrol tank, but the 728i is model specific. Just my luck. Filled it up for the first time since buying it, and I've lost a third of a tank over my drive overnight. Not funny.

Dealers want £570 (and that's discounted), ECP and GSF have none in stock and I've phone ALL the BMW breakers in the country... and there's none. I can get a 730/735/740/750 tank, but that's an incorrect part number.

Anyone got one...? Long shot I know... please help me.

Giles

Yup... I've tried PartsGateway, and every other breaker I could find on the internet... Beginning to think the bargain I bought at the beginning of the week is not so much of a bargain anymore!

Oh well... I'll keep searching and praying!

Anyone know what the difference is between the 728 and the others?

I'll have a look in my TIS and see if there is any notes on it - what year is your 728?

by the way - do you only have the problem if you fill it to the brim? could it be some kind of expansion overflow valve opening but not closing off in time to only let the minimum out? I know there is some kind of issue with brimming the 7 series tank.

Spoken to the dealers just now, and one's 85 litres, and the other's 95 litres... and there's something to do with a levelling device. BMW aren't prepared to say whether a different tank would fit or not. Grrrrr!

My 728 is a '96 model.

Just had confirmation that there's a hole and it's leaking from the feed in to the tank at the bottom, which makes filling it up only to half not an option!

Bugger bugger bugger.

I'd suggest trying midland bm as well only I was there the other day and didn't notice any 728's being broken (just a 740).

Nothing helpful in the TIS.

Time to sacrifice a chicken, do a little dance and pray to the gods of horsepower for divine intervention methinks.

just thought - bmw might not be prepared to say if one of the other tanks will fit but a good helpful indy might be prepared to tell you. Don't give up hope just yet (and take your hand off that hen's neck)

Jenks... I've seen the 740... the Green one, right? If only another tank from an E38 would fit. Don't want to waste my money on a 740 tank only to find it wouldn't fit...

Eta... thanks dude. Tried them all, but no luck. (warey of trying the German site though)

A bit of luck... had an email from BMW Used Spares in Bethnall Green... £350 for a used one!!! Do I go for this, or fork out £570 for a brand new one from the dealers that would be all shiney and sparkly...? I'm also warey whether this second hand one is definitley from a 728i... or he's just trying to make a sale... know what I mean?

that's a tough call. I say go for it! You could probably recoup some of your outlay on ebay if it does turn out to be a dud - and if it is we can start a hate campain of bombarding him with stupid requests to teach him a lesson.

Is welding the current tank an option at all? Obviously sounds ridiculous.... welding, petrol vapour.... boom etc etc, but if you get a skilled specialist they can happily patch up a scabby tank. May cost around 100 quid. Surprised a ten year old tank has rotted out TBH, I know the e28s are famous for that but the youngest of them is almost 20.

The bloke with the used tank, get him to give you the part number if he has it to make sure, as you say he could be after a sale and could well tuck you up with a 740 tank. If in doubt, or if feeling a bit flush, go for the BMW tank. At least that way there should be no hassles, but take it to a good indy for fitting!

Doive... asked for the part number via e-mail, we'll see what turns up. What part number do I need anyway????

Nice Eta you have. Sold mine yesterday and new owner picks it up tomorrow... '85 on a B with 67k on the clock!

Asked Indy's about other tanks, they reckon to stay safe and fit a 728 unit as the others might foul exhausts, having incompatible fixings / joints, etc...

The search continues...

I think the part number is 16111183145 - am I right?

According to realoem, your tank is part number 16111183145 as you say, while other models appear to be fitted with 16111181867. Seems strange, but there must be a reason for it - bit like Vauxhall fitting the Chevette with four different steering columns for no apparent reason.

So what made you change from the eta? I like mine, but the fuel economy feels as if there is a hole in the tank!

Hope you get it all sorted out.

I would buy new as there is not that much difference in price. That used tank could be 8 years old now.

The German site is highly recommended and has been used by several people on this forum. They specialise in parts for the older cars, but you never know ...............

Giles - you've still got the 525e to use, so take the
tank out of the 728i (a fun, fun job) and get it welded.
You'll of course need to fill it with water completely
and leave it overnight to purge the fumes, but once
welded you can cover the repair with stuff called PRC
(petrol resistent compound) - I've no idea where to
get it though! Chemical metal might indeed do the
trick but I really would weld it first.

B*llocks to spending £500 plus on a fuel tank for a
ten year old car.

The 728i tank is different because the V8 and V12
cars have two exhaust systems running along under
the car.

BTW the silver 525e has it's 325i head conversion all
done and finished. I've been using it of late, goes
pretty well. Someone wants the autobox though so
it's coming to bits end of the month!

BTW, £350 for a used tank? You must be joking - it's
£200 tops.

Picked the car up yesterday with what the mechanic described as a temporary fix. I've looked at it, and from what he says and what I've seen, it seems a pretty substantial repair.

So, until it happens again, I'm happy to trundle around with it in this state of repair. My eyes are always open for a replacement tank though as I can't have the car off the road again for any length of time as both my 525e's have been sold... The driveable one (67k on the clock) has been taken, while the spares car (it's exact tiwn, but with 176k on the clock) is still sat on my driveway awaiting a trailer...

£350 for a used tank... I know! I told the guy where to go... he got a bit shirty with me claiming that "I'd not find another one...." - I'd rather spend more on a new one thank you!

Cheers guys!
