Hello all.I have recently aquired a very nice e23 735i SE Feb 82 model. The car is totally original with FSH and loads of goodies.

It has two problems. The first is when I turn left or right slowly the diff makes a rumble. This could be down to the wrong oil, does anyone know the correct type.

The second problem is that the cruise control is not working.

Cheers

Can't say about the diff, but the cc will be down to electrics somewhere (no surprise there then). Unplug and clean all contacts that you can and check continuity. There is an ecu in the n/s footwell behind the speaker grille. Bit of a pig to get at/out, but can be done, I would leave that to last.

PS. Welcome!

Probably is a creaky LSD that had the wrong oil.
Someone here is breaking a 735i with a good LSD
and cruise control. P.M me for his number.

Hi Sharknose, welcome to the board.
Change the oil in the diff with proper oil, but it'll still make a few rumbling noises anyhow, nature of the diff I'm afraid.

Andy, pushing Hiab's parts still then?

Well you know what losers E23 owners are! :-) All
talk and no action..............

The sad thing is, a complete 735i with buffalo
leather, sweet engine and LSD will be crushed into a
cube this time next week. They don't even
keep them in for breaking now - it's in the yard, a
bloke with a crane and grab rips the engine out and
the rest is crushed. The same thing happened to
Hiab's 745i last month (minus the engine), now it's
time for this one. That's the trouble with worthless
cars, the parts are worth nothing also.

Of course, when all the rare and useful bits are
gone, owners will whine like hell when there are
none left! I hate E23's with a passion so it's no skin
off my nose, just seems like a pity that's all. Not as if
we're talking lots of money either.

Diff cured with the correct oil,not had chance to check contacts on cc.Thanks.

Can you post me his number. Thanks again.

That's a little bit strong Andy, we don't all have places to store these cars when they come along like yourself and Hiab. Owners of the e23 are reliant on guys like Hiab to keep their cars running. If we could have a space next to a garage to keep an old car to keep the ones we have running, the e23 world would be a better place (at least for us)

Anyhow you're right on the rare parts situation though, but many of us are storing up the rarer and hard to find parts now, and between us we do hold quite a stock, so in essence we don't need to have a spares car sitting there.

Well it was meant as a bit of harmless sarcasm (the
highest form of wit). I remember quite clearly
Horsetan offering you all a place to store a scrap
735i whilst you stripped it - of course there were the
usual excuses and nothing happened..........

As far as I know, Pete has had this car rotting in his
garden along with the blue 745i for 18 months. None
of the regular E23 posse have yet rescued any bits. I
wasn't talking about anyone taking the whole car -
but for one E23 owner to get some dollars out and
buy a few bits before it gets dropped into a very hot
foundry.
Sorry, but I wasn't under the impression that Pete
was obliged to keep an E23 in his garden on the
unlikely offchance that one of you chaps might need
something.
If you're at all serious about E23's, you'd be having
the interior trim, LSD, wings, chrome and other rare
expensive (when new) bits - hardly lottery money is
it? In five years time there will be none of these left
and you'll be going to BMW for parts.

He did, that is so, but since quite a few of us have either families or work all hours, we couldn't afford the time to go across and do the deed. As for Hiab, never said he was obliged to do what he does, he does it for money, he'll buy a car strip it, sell the parts, make some money scrap the rest, & well he does have them for a while, so whilst they are around we have no need to get a spares car ourselves and strip it for spares. However the point of the comment made is a valid one, but as space to store these things is very limited, it's a chance we will have to take.
