The car is december 93 so would this be vanos or not,the autocar test sounds about right,I bought and sold an E30 316 lux touring last month and it was a nice drive, however the tin worm had started on most panels so it wasnt one to keep.

I had a play with the steptronic box on the 4.4V8 when I first bought it and provided you drove sensibly then i feel it was slightly more economical than using sports mode.

Bit tedious for continual use though.

I cant understand why a car would be more economical when the engine revs are higher, surely to be getting optimum efficiency from an engine you need to be doing 57 mph. My 523 does another 7-8mpg when doing 65 as appose to 80!....

My 520 is much better on fuel at 80-85 than at 50. 28mpg compared to 18-20. Odd? Yes! Can someone explain this? Or is the A1 turning into the Bermuda Triangle?

I went to france and back the other month. £55 to fill the tank to the top and total round trip was just under 500miles. did it all on 1 tank. i thought that was good.

Speed around 80 - 85MPH

I get around 20 mpg out my 535is man, 80 litre tank only does 320 miles if driving it easy, then mpg will go down to low teens when pushed.

Try different fuels, some people say their bmws run better and with better mpg on Optimax, Ultimal and other supers.......

The car has returned a mere 18.9 on the second fill with steady driving around town,im wondering if i do have a problem as the sparkplugs were black and sooty when i changed them, indicating shes running a bit on the rich side.

I just did 360 miles this weekend, about 300 of which were on A roads and the other in small villages. My E39 528 steptronic gave an average of 32.7mpg....admittedly that was 95% drivin like my nan, but there was plenty of foot down action. I never realised Autos could hit the rev limiter!! Conclusion...in sports/manual mode the car does do about 4 mpg more!! well chuffer for findin this out

My 4 litre V8 touring averages a respectable 28-30mpg on the 25 minute trip from my house to my brothers, that is approx 10 miles of 90% winding B roads and 10% straight 60mph! I think thats rather good for a thirsty V8 (thats with wife n 2 kids in the car too!)  I must admit though, I am usually quite conservative when driving with the family! I'm lucky to get 15mpg when on my own lol!!

Regards

Mike

Oh, and I forgot to say (though I have said it before) did you know that a V8 is the most economical engine configuration type! mainly because you have two cylinders on the power stroke at any one time.  A V8 is more economical, per cylinder, than any other engine type. V12's you lose with the fuel consumption and weight of engine and at the other end of the spectrum, the four cylinder has to work harder to achive the power that a V8 can produce with much less effort. So, fellow V8 owners, next time you come out with the; "my V8 is very fast" and your mates say; "yes but it uses loads of fuel" you can say, "yes but did you know that a V8 is the  blah..blah........"

Strange but true!

Regards

Mike

I did 354 miles Yesterday with new oil it rained all the way there and I did A & B roads with a fair bit of Sports mode

on the return leg I hit it harder on A 303 M3 M25

I returned 23.7 mpg all round which on the way down was 21 mpg

and on the return journey which was "nippy" I returned 25.7

before the oil change it was hovering around 20 mpg, changing the oil is a great benifit to the engine (& my wallet) IMHO

My 523 Touring hit 36.6 mpg on the On Board Computer driving from Portsmouth to Derby on a quite Saturday afternoon and staying at 70 on Cruise control. This is 90% motorway and Dual carriageway. This was fully freighted with wife, Kids, cat and the dog and 2 big suit cases and food for the week. The Tyres were slightly over inflated. And i was bored stiff.                                                                Coming home i stayed at the 85 mark and overtook loads of stuff and the on board read 32mpg. So the moral is enjoy yourself and boot it. Also my attension was alot more focussed the faster i went.

Just thought I'd add my two penneth worth

I got 430 miles out of my 530 auto (just sold) when driving carefully up to bonny Scotland and I've just got about the same from the 520 - although this revs a lot higher

I tend to drive with the 'real time mpg' indicator on the 30mpg (on the motorway) - with this set I can fluctuate between 65mph and 80mph and will always get over 400 miles from a tank - around town then I'm lucky to get over 300

A bit better than my 540 then .... but not by much i have taken to shifting through the auto as "manually" as i can using 2-3-4 gears which even with some spirited driving it wont budge from 24.1 mpg thats a mix of around town and country the lowest i have ever got is 16.1 mpg giving it some beans... but if i wanted a really economical car i would have bought something more sensible like an E34 M5 or 850 CSI.....

regards

chaz
