Has anyone experimented with E24 final drive diff ratios? I was having some thoughts at changing mine to reduce top end and bring the acceleration lower in the range on my 635CSI as were i am a car wouldnt see faster than 140kmh or you get locked up Im not sure how feasable this idea is as know nothing about BMW diffs, Anyone know what other sizes fit? All Bmw casings appear the same so maybe there all interchangeable.. something out of a 320 would be more adequate for me but will such a diff accept the Lsd internals , Like to hear anyones thoughts on the subject, Regards Rodge

635CSi's use the really big E23 type diff and the
ratios are around the 3.07 mark. Having said that the Highlines from the end of 1987 use a much lower 3.64 diff which reduces top gear mph/1000 rpm from 32 to 27 mph. Non catalyst M6's are 3.73. If you can get one from the USA, the Yankee spec 12v cars have a 3.45 and the M6 has a 3.91. All will fit no problem. A 3.73 M635CSi diff would be about ideal I should think. The next diff down is the 'Typ 188' which was used on everything from the 323i E30 up to the 528i. An E28 528i LSD will fit, ratios around the 3.45 mark depending on year and what gearbox it had. E34 and E32 diffs don't fit! |

if your car is pre '82 you need an E12 diff (sideloader). Some say an E30 M3 diff can be made to fit later '82 on cars, available with a 3.9 (or thereabouts) LSD option. cheers

Many thanks fellas, (All Anoraks hung neatly back on racks My cars 87 so be later type, Seems like not a simple idea then, pity, Is the 628 the same ratio too? surely they wouldnt pull you out of bed! i was hoping that would be the easy swap but itd be far to easy. I duno if id bother looking for an m6 diff, itd be a headache get one from usa and they might send you anything -or nothing. My 635 still remains a slug, il work something out yet.. |

The M6 diff is a little bigger in the casing and will need some underfloor modifications to fit a non m635 car. I think it has more cooling fins.
