try a squirt of WD40 inside and a few dozen operation cycles; this can work wonders, costs nothing... you might be surprised

My Idle has been all over the place since I had my car. Did a few checks with the multimeter last night and it appears that the microswitch which registers idle isn't working, unless you apply extra pressure to it using a screwdriver or the like. It's adjusted up correctly as you can hear it click as soon as the throttle is opened and again when it closes. Someone has been there before me though as the screws which hold it in position are a bit mangled. Time for a new one me thinks...

this is the E28 haynes in pdf. I have an earlier 81-82 car and use the E12 haynes, the E28 haynes and the E28 Bentley aswell as the Chiltons book (which is a bit poo tbh). Between that lot and the various forums I can find out most stuff

the E28 Haynes manual is OK for electrial stuff too ( so long as yours is an '82-'89 model). Obviously trim details and component locations are different on the E24; for those it is either the Bentley manual or the BMW one. I am told the BMW one is more comprehensive, but vague in places when compared with the Bentley manual. The bentley manual also covers US models; their emissions controls, specifications and other details are quite different to UK models.

I use the Haynes manual myself; its not perfect but good for the price. I am told it is available online, too- someone posted the link a few weeks ago.

Haynes  for e28 is really good for mechanical stuff....But I haven't got one , so no more comments.

It seems that idle problem lie in the AFM...My friend had the same problem and the inner contact rails were dirty ..He opened up the AFM and tried to clean it ...A real nightmare , as inner components are delicate.....

thanks brucey -will have a look, i did find some spare
relays in the cubby hole behind one of the back
seats which might surrgest some previous probs. i
will have to take a closer look at which ones they are.
i hope its obvious too!

on a side note - does anyone know where i can get a
good manual from? how relevent or usefull is the
e28 haynes manual?

this sounds like it just might be a problem with the main DME relay. It lives just in front of the fuse box. With the engine idling, give it a wiggle; if it makes the engine stumble or stop you may have your culprit. Best unplug it and clean all the contacts on the base, replace, and try again. Some 6er owners carry a spare as they can fail altogether when they are old.

The only other things that might do it are the immobiliser relay or the instrument cluster being faulty. Its difficult to diagnose these faults, I hope its something obvious...

my six has developed a problem at idel. she usually
ticks over at a grand smoothly but recently has been
having a intermittent dip as if its gonna cut out, but
does not. its fine up the rest of the rev range and
when its first started, it just seems to develop after a
short run.

when it has a blip the rev counter dorps off and the
ecomany meter has a spaz as well!

any ideas?

please bear in mind im new to six's and bmws and i
dont know alot about the injection system!
