ZEROK, are you in America? With it being the 325E then it did use a CAT and as such also used an O2 Sensor, the CAT's weren't introduced on this side of the pond until 91/92, therefore the confusion. You do have an O2 sensor in the exhaust, no12 here - http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=1254&mospi d=47308&btnr=18_0173&hg=18&fg=10

If they tested the O2 sensor then I take it it was confirmed as OK? If it was OK then I would start looking at what was then recommended re the Coolant temp sensor or the AFM.

Yeah, check the CTS for resistnce cold and warm. The AFM can cause this type of problem when the track inside gets worn too. Do be careful tho running it like this, you can get severe petrol wash down the bores into the oil. I had water contamination in my ECU that caused the same types of symtoms and ended up adding a litre of petrol to the oil, ended up rattling a wee end bearing.

Mate a 1984 wont have an O2 sensor but it will have a coolant temp sensor which will cause it to overfuel do you notice that it runs better hot or cold as thiswill make a hell of a difference as to what the problem is

were the plugs very sooty?  If so, the car is being over fueled.

And what do you mean you did not overfuel?

I would check the ignition timing as well.

Black smoke would indicate a rich mixture, i.e. you're over fueling.

Take out the plugs, what do they look like?

Are you sure it is black smoke?  Not being patronising but some people call blue smoke black, but whether smoke is black or blue has a big bearing on the state of your engine.
