Just returned from a visit to the local main dealer. Had my '95 840 in to identify cause of a pretty bad steering wobble between 50-60 mph. They diagnosed worn wheel bearings and the two front struts require replacement. Quoted a total price of £1,300 Anyone know if I have any options regarding replacement struts? Does it have to be BMW or are there aftermarket items available. any help/advice would be appreciated.

I do 2 8 series cars as jobs on the side and no one does E31 parts. Most stuff you'll have to buy from stealers (dealers).

Hi Tom, sorry I know of no aftermarket strut suppliers for front suspention, only shocks and springs.

Cheers Ian.

Thanks to those that replied. I was afraid that I would have to go for the OEM struts. It's not that they don't perform well, it was just the cost that made me cringe a bit. As I intend keeping the car until she turns to dust anyway I'll bite the bullet soon and replace them.

Off to MIJ Performance in Walsall tomorrow to have a stainless exhaust fitted. I'll let you know how things go.

Tom hi

Why the need to replace the whole leg, has the car been damaged?

Did they say what state the thrust arm bushes were in?

I feel sure i could offer some help with a little more info.

Regards Steve

Are you the guy with the light metalic blue 840?

The problem is that the front legs are complete
sealed units. What has been done is to ditch all that
crap and use a pair of E32 750i struts and brakes,
and use some decent Bilstein inserts along with the
original 8 Series springs. I don't know the exact
details - for instance the 8 Series struts use E36 top
mounts.

I'm glad I don't have my 840Ci anymore - they look
like turning into real money pits. Suddenly a Porsche
928 looks like a really good idea..........
