Hi all,

I know I'm buying a new car soon, but....

There seems to be banging coming from the back of the car, i.e., when I go over potholes, speed bumps, e.t.c. It's not a knock, and is quite loud. The best way I can describe it is, it's like an empty metal bin, and something inside it is moving about and banging on the sides.....if that makes sense.

I've had a look at the exhaust, it's certainly not that. Could it be something to do with the springs/suspension? It really does bang. Made me jump first time I heard it!

Chris

EDIT. It's a 97' E39 523iSE by the way.

Rear shock top mounts? Can sound like a squeaky bed with lots of general rattles too.

not sure if the e39 even has them, but early e46s were bad for rear trailing arm bushes, gives a loud thumping noise similar to what you describe and uneven rear tyre wear

Lol about the missus. Nah, I make her get out and walk back home instead!

Checked the spare wheel, it's fine. Checked the battery compartment, and the compartment where the CD changer is kept.....fine.

If the rear passenger side of the car goes over a bump.....fine. If my side of the rear of the car goes over a bump, then BANG, so it must be something to do with the drivers side rear shock/suspension.

This must rule out the exhaust then, as that's on the opposite side, even though I checked that anyway!

I can't wait to get rid and get that 540i

Stephen, I'm not sure about the trailing arms, I've never even heard of them! Oh, and do you have any more pictures of your Estoril E39 Alpina? It's absolutely lovely!

I know this isn't on the drivers side but have you checked the rear exhaust silencer heat shield?  Mine is loose and has been known to make a knocking noise.
