With country roads I get 320-330 miles on a tank, and on motorways I get 410-430 miles on a tank, tends to depend on how much the auto box is up and down the gears on my weekly route to work

I do a 25 mile round trip along country lanes every day with the auto box constantly up and down and scrape 150 miles to £30.......still I've been tooling around in an Audi A4 1.8T quattro this week and only managed about the same from that!

OUCH!! Mind you that makes the BM seem really economical against the audi!!

I bet you weren't driving the audi cautiously - the 1.8T's go like stink

e34silver530i - my H reg 530i 12v was similar to yours (same engine) - but I've noticed that the V8 is more economical - I can drive much more with the real time mpg thing on 30mpg.

My H reg was a bit if a banger, but I actually liked her and she got me 250 miles from £29 worht of petrol !

The Audi was AWFUL....quattro = sports suspension = trip to chiropractor plus seats were slightly less comfortable than a park bench.

The Audi felt fast but wasnt impressed...it didnt feel fast once back in the 5.

What is 150 miles to £30 of fuel?.....23mpg I reckon. Not bad considering I always get caught behind someone doddering along at 40mph....plus its all twisties and up and downs and villages every 4 miles or so.

I only ever managed 28/29mpg in the old 520.

Though the M3 used to get 25-26 on average!

Hmm typically I get 400+ miles to the tankfull in my 525 (M20).

However for the tiger this is an example journey...

The journey there was 88 miles and used 16.8 litres of unleaded giving me 24mpg.

The track mileage was 13 miles and used 6 litres of unleaded giving me 9.75mpg (this includes a trip to get lunch of about 2 miles of normal road driving).  So  the track driving was probably at 7-8mpg.

Not bad for a 2ltr Ford Pinto engine!

You shouldn't have let me see that fingerman, the wife wants a change of car next and it'll end up being me looking for a silver530i v8, which will mean I'm in the doghouse again!!

All e34's except the M5 and possibly Alpina B10 which I believe has a 90 ltr tank

Correct 80 litre tank here.

e34silver530i - go for it - get yourself a nice V8 530 ! - I put up with being in the dog house due to the amount of times I've changed my car

So what we're basically saying is that the E39 520 (and my old 523) is more economical - obviouse really - newer engine, less cc etc. The diesel E34 are obviously more economical - I think the only ones who could beat me 530 are the 518 (later models with the newer engine) and the 525 - M50 ???

What do you think - Anyone have any figures from the 2 above ?

Chaz (or anyone else who's got a 540) - what mpg do you get from her ?

I'm thinking - that may be my next motor but as I do a lot of travelling, I don't want to lose money - although I do okay out of the 530 - which I think may be one of the most economical ones out of the petrol engined E34's.

Was thinking of a diesel, but my local Indy said to steer clear (pump quite common to go) and the ones I've heard sound like Taxi's.

A nice 540 would be good - depending on mpg

Incidentally since having the fuel vent pipe leak fixed my MPG has gone from 23.9 average to 26.4!

Not bad for a cheap repair....

I've got a manual 1995 540 touring; I've got a pretty heavy foot and love the power too much, but on a run I get 27-30 and arsing around in commuting traffic I get 21-24 - I suspect 35+ on a run and high 20's in traffic could be possible if I could be bothered to drive that tamely/conservatively/considerately/uninterestedly/economica lly *

Incidentally for comparison figures my 1985 M635 will do 40 on a run, 28 or so in traffic, but my 1982 635 with a three speed auto will only just manage 30 on a run and just hit low 20's in traffic. The three speed auto is the big hit for the 635 but the lower weight (compared to the 540 touring) of the M635 is probably why it does so well

I get about 18mpg out of my 535. I do enjoy the back roads to much though. Mine has the 80 litre tank as well. Will do 24 or so on a motorway cruise.
