Thinking of fitting one to my car then maybe get the BBTB & manifold conversion done. Obviously a heatshield is needed for any real gains but was thining of one of the carbon sealed units like a pipercross viper or a bmc one as they seem to offer the best gains on paper as they are supposidly resistant to heat. Any opinions on these products before I go & buy one? Also with the sealed units wheres the best place to mount the cold air feed tube as there isn't much room in an M52 bay.

Dean.

Invest in a tried and tested, Dave F kit - via e36coupe.com or flea-bay advert. He has performance info too to support what he makes and sells.

I'm also looking for a good cold air induction kit, to replace the 57i I currently have (with my bespoke heat shield which I think is suffocating my poor car ).  However, I have an E30 325i (which is lightly modified).  What would you recommend for an M20 engine?

If Dave cannot offer a shield to compartmentalise the hot air away from your filter - you may have to invest in a CDA type box - it's alot of money but the at least the intake air is shielded. As far as I can remember CDA's will fit the 325's engine bay without too many mods, and you can squeeze the inlet pipe either through to the front of the rad, or duct it from the brake cooling duct - similar to the E36 (if your horn isn't stuck right in the way that is )

Thanks for the advice, I'll see what Dave F says.  If CDA is the best way forward so be it, and if the horn is in the way then I'll move it (doesn't work half the time anyway, thanks to the cr*ppy horn button on my Sparco steering wheel!)

The alternative to moving the horn to a new mounting position, is simply try and squeeze the duct in-between the NS light and the radiator side wall. Not that clever to be honest, but there is very little option - hence why Dave F has spent so much time and effort trying to prove that the open shield/ filter kit he offers - is simply the most straight forward route. For the money it makes a lot of sense, although I can appreciate you already have the 57i kit - perhaps have a chat to Dave F, as he may be able to sort out just the heat shield element of his kit for you. At least this way your induction can draw in all the free flowing cool air available rather than only a restricted smaller dia. pipe amount.
