break lights have life of their own!

we have a 1998 318i se, its one of the first e46 shapes and for months now we've had the same problem where the dash board tells me all three brake lights are on and stay on(whether foot is on pedal or not) and the radio goes off leaving the sat nav display blank. it stays on for as long as it likes and sometimes if you restart engine its ok and the radio comes back on. we've taken it to a number of places. we've had the brake switch changed, its been on 4 diagnostic machines for over 6 hours and showed up nothing as the brake lights and radio behaved while in the garage! we're at our wits end and have no idea what to try next. we initially thought it was water in the electrics but have been told we would have needed to go through some pretty deep water for that to have been a problem and even in weather as hot as we have now it still persists. we'd love to know if anyone else has had this problem.
