    Posted: 24-July-2006 at 21:44
I've been experimenting with my E34 540 noticed today that when pulling away at max throttle in sports mode, the ASC light in the middle of the dash flashed on and off.  The wheels did not spin (its an auto anyway!) and all was well.

I thought this only worked when you had the ASC switch depressed!  As the ASC light is on solidly when this button is pressed.

Whatever it is doing, can it be turned off (the flashing even with ASC off ?).

Any advice would be cooL!

I know on the E39 that ASC is on automatically. pressing the switch kind of turns it off (light on dash full time).
Holding the switch in for 10 seconds really kind of turns ASC off (dash light out permanently until next startup).

I have been driving withour ASC for over a year and no problems (I used to always turn it off fully anyway).
Sure what did people do before electronics?

So does this stuff apply to the E34 like mine ?? Can I do the same 'hold the button down to turn off' thing like on the E39 ?

Electronics does a lot to keep you on the road on adverse driving conditions and when you are pushing it hard. The light flashing is to let you know that it has kicked in. Leaving it on (IE., the light not permanantly on) this is the default position is what is reccomended. But if you are taking t to the race track, then switching ASC may add to the fun by allowing wheel spin!

Yes its telling you that its aiding you a little. ie. slight loss of traction. It does exactly the same as the E39.
You can have wicked fun with it turned off completely

The light may still flash when you turn it off fully.  Don't know why.
