    Posted: 31-July-2006 at 14:32

Hi, Looking for some help identifying a gearbox I have. I purchased it around 12 months ago for my E24, however it did not fit. It has got B10 written on it and wondered if anyone knows if it is actually off a B10.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Jim.

That looks very much like a B10 BiTurbo E34 box,
Getrag 290 with an M30 bellhousing bolt pattern.

No, it won't fit. You just want a standard E28/E34
Getrag 260 (E28 525i-535i). What year is your E24?

I havn't got the E24 anymore sadly. The rot had set in too much so I stripped it and let all the parts go etc etc.

Thanks for your input regarding the box. If it is off a B10 Bi-turbo what sort of money is it worth? Is there anywhere I can vouch the fact that it is off one of these? part numbers etc. I have done a search on Getrag on the net and cannot seem to find the info I need.

I bought it off a very established BMW parts company and was told it had done 54000 miles. It was a lot cleaner when I bought it. It has just got dusty/dirty over the past 12 months having been sat on the floor of a body shop.

Cheers, Jim.

If it's a BiTurbo box then it's a very limited market...  These were produced specifically for the B10 BiTurbo and there were only 507 of them made.

The box in mine is working well - much more reliable than the E34 M5 box which is known to whine and lose synchromesh

Look around the bellhousing edges and there may
be a stamped in serial number with a couple of
letters - it might take some finding but that's what you
need.

Cheers for the replies.

I have found the number around the bellhousing and it reads as

290.5.65000103

Does anyone know what these mean?

Cheers in advance, Jim.

290/5 is a BiTurbo box. I'd say it's worth anything
from £500 upwards to anyone who needs one. It's a
unique gearbox to that car and does not fit any other
BMW although you could in theory fit it to an M5
because the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same as
the M30 engine used in the BiTurbo.
Find out how much they cost new from Alpina and go
from there - I reckon you'd not have much change
from £4000 if you needed a new one.
