I need to find some new wheels & tyres for a Six I'm buying. It has TRXs on which are £219+vat each!!! (& not available until Nov).

I was thinking of 8x17" with 245/40 tyres. Alpinas are the default choice but I like the look of Rondell Type 58's too. My Six is a Motorsport version which has M6 suspension with 240/45 x 415 tyres as standard.

I have 8x17 Alpina replicas on mine with 235 45 zr17 Uniroyal Tyres as shown below. I can't tell you what a difference it makes to the car from the old 390 metrics i had on before. I would say the car has 30% more grip in the dry and 50% more grip in the wet as a result. I also feel a softer ride contray to what should happen, but i think this is due to having softer sidewalls as metrix were designed so they could not come off the rim if they lost air which makes them much stiffer. They do give a bit more road noise, but no more than a modern BMW with the same size tyres. I would not go bigger than 17" though and i think that 17" wheels look better than 16". The other reason i went for 17" wheels was so that i could fit the 850csi brake calipers which require the bigger wheels.

The other great thing is tyre prices are cheaper and you can have a tread pattern designed in this Milenium rather than a treadpattern from the 70's.

Another wheel that looks fantastic is the split rim cross spoke of an 850csi, 540i and 740i. These are 8x17 fronts and 9x17 rears as seen here http://www.bigcoupe.com/cars/othersixes/images/leon.jpg . You will require a 255 45 zr 17 for the rears. This will also be as wide as you can go. Another great wheel for the 6 is the Hartge classics split rims as seen here http://www.bigcoupe.com/cars/featured.jpg. I have got these pictures from http://www.bigcoupe.com. were you can see many sixes with different wheels and tyre combinations although the majority are American.

Cheers Sohlman.

I have just been advised by Munich Legends to go for a 235/40 or /45 width as it gives less tramlining than a 245. Think I'll go for 45 aspect rather than 40 for the comfort factor. Want to keep same size wheels/tyres front & rear to even out wear (newest always on rear).

Can't seem to find out who makes Alpina copies. Rondell 58's are BBS copies with a nice deep dish.

On a slightly different note, ML advised against poly bushes as they can lead to subframe cracking!!!

Now this is news to me. I had understood that urethane bushes were useful at getting rid of the infamous steering vibration which occurs usually between 50 and 60mph and also under heavy braking.

You might want to have a look at this, though:

http://www.ultimategarage.com/special10.html

as an alternative to the urethane bush suggestion.

Hi AndyS, I would have a chat with Motormec who I get all my 6 parts for. They have a large range of wheels as well as other bits and and i got my wheels and tyres plus metal valves for about £700 + posting. I then took them to a local tyre place to have them put on the car and a 4 wheel balance done.  They also do the Rondells, but these don't look as good as the 850 wheels. Good but not that good.

Motormec 01502 500590 and ask to speak to Andy. Have a look on there website on http://www.bmwparts.uk.com. As for Munich Legends they are very good, but are about double the price of anywhere else. I use Hartlake based in kent for my servicing and specialist work as they are just as knowledgable and are 60%cheaper.  Contact them on 01474 326626 and ask to speak to Angelo or Phil.

As for newest on the rear whilst i understand this argument in a powerful rear drive car, the most important area for having good tyres is under hard braking in the wet and thus I have to agree to disagree with this point. That is unless the car does not get used in the wet in which case then i agree. (Does that make any sense)

Alpina replicas are made by BK Wheels

Cheers for the info.

I live in the North East but I'm buying the Six from Munich Legends.

New fittings throughout will sort the shimmy.

Brother's a traffic cop (!?!) who knows from experience about the tyre fitting. Reason is it promotes understeer rather than oversteer in front or rear drive which is easier to control ie. lift off!

Check out post "washing the sixes" on E24 message board for Rondells.

If you buy from Munich Legends you should get a great car however you will pay through the nose for it. Myself and Horsetan and a bunch of other 6 series owners have been getting together monthly to meet and discuss running, upgrading, modifying etc our cars. If you have any questions please feel free to post and we will get back to you. I am going to be going to the independent indoor BMW show at Donington Park and i am trying to get my car there as one of the feature cars. If you want to come down i wll be happy to chat with you about the shark for the whole day.

P.s where is washing the sixes you did not give a web address.

You will also pay through the nose if you ask them to do conversions, or almost anything else. Sometimes, you just have to do the work yourself...

Some modifications are irreversible. Be very careful when deciding what to change.

Tell me about it! I figured that if I was going to have a Six I should have the best (because I'm worth it!) & after visiting ML I thought they'd be as good a source as any. Also there just don't seem to be any Sixes at all up my way.My six is a 2 owner '89 Highline Motorsport with 64k miles & full main dealer history. It's getting a full front suspension overhaul + bits & pieces.

I was planning to go to the BMW show but I'm busy that weekend. It will be nice to put a face to the emails when we do meet.

I'll be sure to run any ideas past you guys before I do anything
"washing Sixes" was on http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e24/forum.php?postid=3974259&page=1  Maggo635 has website my635.com too.
