Hi all

My 318ti m44 has developed a sewing machine noise that is always present. Very quiet at low revs, much more obvious and ticky under load and high revs.

I don't seem to be down on power as the car still pulls cleanly as ever. The only thing is that the idle is lumpy.

It's due and oil change and I'll put some injector cleaner through it as well. Fuel has been run down to empty a few times lately so i'm worried the system has a partial blockage of old sediment.

Is this likely to be a tappet thing? It's a 2000/X reg that has done 107k miles but has been serviced regularly. If it is a tappet problem does anyone have any idea what the cost of getting it fixed properly might be at a good independant specialist?

Believe it or not it's more likely to be a fracture in the Exhaust Manifold.  Mine made that noise before it completely went!

If the idle is lumpy, check for cracks/perishing everywhere around the inlet manifold.

If the exhaust manifold cracks, the noise with get worse under load.

Sounds more like the fuel pump to me.

Uh-oh. Hopefully it's just the manifold and I can get a guy to weld it up for me. Although if it needs replacing I could get a high flow job!
