As winter is aproaching and bulb technology has greatly improved in recent years, i am going to buy some upgraded dipped and main beam bulbs. I have 2 problems however. Firstly my current bulbs on my 1986 non highline 635csi are fused on. This means that i will have to take the entire light assemble off to get enough purchase to get the old bulbs off. (I am told this will be a two hour job) Secondly as i can't see the bulbs i don't know which ones are the correct size. I now know that H1 bulbs are incorrect as these where the bulbs used on the eliptically lighted highlines. I think the correct bulbs are H4, but i am not completely sure. Can someone confirm if i have got the size of bulb correctly, and recomend a bulb combination which will allow me to see the best from my old car? Your help is most apreciated James |

Try this site www.powerbulbs.com If you order main beam bulbs you get side light bulbs for free. I have fitted the Phillips Vision Plus to mine which are brighter than standard.

Cheers for that Ant318is, had already looked at that site, but there seem to be a lot of options of bulbs and i am not sure which ones are going to work best. Plus I am a bit nervous of ordering some bulbs when i am not completely sure what bulb size i require.

In order to verify the correct size and type of bulb, refer to your owner's instruction book (if you still have one). If you can find them, try a set of Osram Silverstar bulbs.
Until last year, I used to have the same type of "free form" headlights as you on my 1983 Six, but the covering "buckets" seized on, so I had them chucked out and replaced with the ellipsoid type when the car was restored last year. In order to get to the headlight assemblies, you will have to unscrew and remove the headlight grilles. This is a laugh-and-a-half, and explains why it can take two hours or more. In their infernal wisdom, BMW decided to have all the mounting screws facing to the outside. Except one. The one which faces to the inside and is virtually inaccessible is the one mounted above the front indicator section. The only way to get to it is to pop the bonnet open, and use a posidrive tool to get at the retaining nut. If you're lucky, time will not have rusted this nut and caused it to seize... If you're able to obtain a good used set of ellipsoids from a scrapped "Highline", I'd recommend converting your car to use these. You will have to change the connector plugs at the same time. A brand new set of ellipsoid headlights and mounting frames for the "Highline" Six costs about £450 from BMW.... |

Well all i wanted to do was change the bulbs, but it appears to be a much bigger job than originally planned. I may have to spend a day with my mechanic doing this job in order to get the bulbs off. I will have a look at my handbook and see what it says. I think i also have some bulbs in my toolkit so i can look those up whilst i am at it. Highline headlights are very exspensive and difficult to get hold of. If i find some before i do the job, then I will put them on and then upgrade the bulbs. Cheers for the advice guys |

Expensive to convert to ellipsoids, but worth it in the end. The cover plates at the back of each bulb are plastic and are less likely to seize up.
Then there's the LED high-level brake bar on the rear windscreen - the offer to fit it for you is still open. |

If you come across any ellipsoids in your travels Horsetan, i would be most interested, as if i am going to take the entire lighting out of the car to change the bulbs it's not any more work to put the other light in. As for the rear high level brake light, i would like to take you up on that kind offer. When my car is functioning I can maybe come up and see you and we can spend some time doing things to our cars. Spoke with Motormec yesterday as i had to order up some bits, and herd the price you got your head for. All i can say is Wow you did well there. The car gods were looking at you in a nicer frame of mind than they have been. |

Ah yes, the new cylinder head... It was delivered to the workshop on Monday, and the smell of burning £50 notes is now wafting through the air, so it is...
The only thing you have to remember when converting to ellipsoids, apart from the different connector plugs and sockets, is that you might have to remove a vertical bar which is sometimes sited on the bodywork directly behind each of the original headlight frames. |

The E34 5 series had elipsoid lights from 1988 - same time as the Highlines came out. They look the same. BMW part sharing means they might fit.

I have to stamp on this one before it gets out of hand. The ellipsoid low-beam headlights fitted to "Highline" Sixes were unique parts. They were not shared with any other BMW, and certainly not the E34s. Buy a set of E34 ellipsoids, by all means, but don't expect their mounting points to fit into the Six! Pre-Highline headlights were mounted in metal frames, which corroded (badly) over time. The introduction of ellipsoids to Highlines meant a change to plastic frames. These are also unique to the Six. This may explain why they are so expensive new. |

Well I did say might. Bit of a bugger as BMW are usually so good at component sharing. What we need is some enterprising soul to make up a conversion kit for all those old E34s & E32s!!!

I have spoken with a specialist about this and they say it is possible to do the conversion, but not recomended. Basically you have to stick in the headlamps, you loose all adjustment and if you don't get it right you will cause the car to fail MOT's. They also said that it is a really big job. They recomended either getting elipsoids or uprating the bulbs.

Had a look at the headlights today and have ordered up some new bulbs today from www.powerbulbs.com (Thanks ant318is). I have finally managed to nail down the bulb size and according to the handbook and the tool kit they are H1. I have ordered some philips units for the headlights and Osrams for the main beam. I have decided not to go with the elipsoids due to costs, and this is the next best option. I will be working on the car on Wednesday and will detail how i get on if i come across any stumbling blocks.

I thought I'd fill you in with how things went. I Have finished fitting the lights and bulbs. Wow was it a fidley job. Intial indications were that it was going to be a 3 hour job. Fortunantly a friend of mine has a grip like a vice and so the back of the headlight could be removed without taking out the grills and light assemble. Took me 1 hour to fit 6 bulbs and the car now has new side, dipped and main beam bulbs. Powerbulbs came up trumps and there delivery arived in 24 hours. I had to clean out the back of the light assemble with a bit of wet and dry and then spread quite thickly some white slip (Basically the same as copper slip, but is able to deal with higher heat loads). Then everything went back together. My lights have gone from dim and difficults to see on dark roads to blindingly bright. I thouroghly recomend making a bulb change to these older cars. What a difference. I basically bought the most powerful bulbs i could whilst remaining within the legal requirements and so Zenon technology bulbs were aquired which offered 50% more light and 20-30 Metres more distance. On initial viewings these claims seem to be about right.

Have not had much of a chance to try them out as am still getting things done to the car, but in half light when i drove it last it was miles brighter. Got some free sidelights when i ordered them from powerbulbs, but they where for the wrong fitment so I got some blue sidelight bulbs from halfords, which give a white light when turned on although a lot duller than the main headlamp bulbs.
