Sorry for being thick, but what engine size is the E30 M3? And why make it a 4 cylinder when you have got a great 6? I thought weight, but obviously this isnt the case. |
If you think back, when the E30 M3 was introduced it was the first BMW to have 4 valves per cylinder and the straight 6 was only 2 valves per cylinder.
You were correct aswell it is actually lighter than the straight 6 lump. Im sure there are reasons I have omitted

The M88 engine was 4 valves per cylinder too and predated the S14.
Don't forget that the M3 was to compete against the Sierra Cossies and there may have been issues there too.
BTW, the E30 M3 was a 2.3 litre and the Evo model was a 2.5.

E30 M3 started off just under 2 litres. Later models / EVO's got massaged, eventually up to 2.5
Why 4 pot and not 6 pot? Because the M3 was originally designed for competition, and the regulations at the time stated 4 pot, so BMW took a 6 pot, and chopped 2 cylinders off it!
I have a M3 & 325i, both are v v quick, but the 325 is s m o o t h power, whilst the M3 is RAW, and all arms to keep up on the gearbox........and great GREAT Fun!
Oh yes, and it will p*ss all over the 325 (& most other cars) on corners (& roundabouts) !!!

Actually the M3 engine is linked to the M10 not the M20 so it is not a chopped 6 cylinder.

The M10 was the original racing engine was it not? Sleeved to a 1400cc and turbocharged. Very stong engine indeed.

Yes. There is a story that they took M10 blocks off the production line and threw them out in a field until they got really rusty. They were then cleaned up and machined as necessary. This apparently was a very good way of stress relieving them after being cast!
There is also the true story that final engines went off the scale in the test rig. The scale stopped at 1400bhp! These engines were guessed to make 1440bhp.

Yeah i did see those, ran something like 800bhp in track ready state didn't they? 1440bhp from a 1400cc has to be a bit of a bitch to drive.
