Should there be lateral play like this in the driveshaft,
if so how much and how easy should it move?

There should be play in it to allow for the wheel going up and down over bumps etc. Don't know how easy it should be to move though.

you have no worries about lateral play as it allows the wheel to arc, it should be farly easy to move, rotational play is a different matter,
