Is it as bad as some people say? What are ye averaging? What's the open road consumption like?

guess it's one of these "if you have to ask" things. E39 M5 will never be a cheap car. I think petrol is your least worry. |

True. I saw a lovely '99 on Pistonheads, and was tempted to change. But did my sums and saw it'd be an extra €450 / month running costs on top of the current monthly cost for my M3 between purchase, roadtax, insurance, petrol & tyres. That provided for 19mpg avg from the M5 compared to the 25.6mpg avg I've got from the M3 to date, over a 15.6k yearly milage that I did last year. But I can do up to 8k extra ontop of that depending on where my projects are in the country. So in summary, as u say if I have to do the sums, I can't run the motor! ( and ). Still, was curious as to what a spread of people actually get out of a tank in them..

on avg. about 17-18 mpg in town driving for me, 25-28mpg for motorway driving which I don't do much of and if I'm out playing who cares what the mpg is. what price would you put on an ear to ear smile as for running costs(servicing/insurance/warranty/repairs) I used to budget for about 3-4K per year but as the warranty has just about doubled that has been dropped. I'll find out over the next 12 months if that was the right decision or not. as long as there is no engine or vanos issues we should be ok. If you can budget for a M5 I would recommend it to anyone Edited by stevie53 |

Thanks for that Steve - those figures are a bit more encouraging! How many miles are up on yours now? The one I liked had 127k which is a bit leggy, but not horrific. |

TJ my car has just turned 65K so it's hardly run in.
as for the mileage on that one you're looking at I admit it is a bit leggy but don't let that put you off, go for the one in the best condition possible regardless of mileage. look at and test drive as many cars as you can, get a thorough inspection before commiting and if possible look for one that has extended warranty remaining so that if any problems occur it'll be hopefully be fixed at no cost to yourself good luck on your search |

£9690 i can't believe it I saw that one under 10K myself and admitedly it does look good especially at that price although the colour is not to everyones taste but I like it, now that car is at the mileage that I would want the car thorughly checked over because these cars could be worse than a mortgage if they go wrong Graham I'll eventually get round to updating sig pic just when I'm ready to go back to original wheels Edited by stevie53 |

Mmmm green the phycopaths choice, nice. Tan interior is very nice. But like Stevie says could cost an arm and a leg. Best to have a serious look at it if you're thinking of getting one. |

yeah but 5.0 V8 for £10,000, and if a normal E39 5 series "is the
best car in the world" what does that make an E39 M5? |

I think the green & tan is a savage colour combo. 160k is steep milage alright, engine-wise. You'd be married to it. Not a bad motor to be married too either, as long as their wasn't a painful V8-related divorce

Bloody hell!! £3000 to £4000 a year running costs excluding petrol. Does anyone remeber the Evo article about £20k cars where they judged the E39 M5 to be the best buy. They never mentioned running costs like that. I reckon if they had the result might have been a bit different. |

@ US M3: yeah tis mid €7k... A stg£10k M5 bought and cleared is low €20k. @ Peter: I remember the article clearly, and have it at home. I also have Steve Sutcliffes long term tests of a 2nd hand E39 M5. Same deal: The Greatest Car In The World, but with the proviso that it'll cost ya a packet to live the dream! |

I have only had mine for 6 months but my costs are not too bad, Insurance is £800, service at a specialist £400 (inspection2). So far i have not had any faults and the car has done 106k miles now. I did have the dash display/clocks replaced but that was under a warranty I purchased when buying the car. I also fitted 4 new tyres as i got a good deal and the previous ones were getting low on tread
As for fuel, well thats a different story, around town i get 15-16 mpg and on a good run have seen as high as 25-26mpg. I always run the car on Optimax/v-power/ Bp ultimate. All in all I have been very pleased with the M5 and obviously if you buy one then you have accept the high fuel/insurance/maintenance costs. I used to have a Mitsubishi evo VI and compared to that my M5 costs about half the money to run |
