got my wheels fitted last weekend and new tyres on saturday. so exquisite. so luxurious. i'm completely besotted with the car again. thing is, i'm sure my gearbox complaint is worsening. i had my lambda sensor changed which made a huge difference to the running of the car, but didn't impact on the rattle.

it's now really making a tik tik tik tik noise when the clutch is out in neutral. it disappears when the clutch is pressed. i'm also hearing a similar rattle when going over bumps.

i have been previously advised to wait and see but i don't know when to be really concerned. i'm worried about doing more damage. my mechanic said it may also be the clutch release bearing- could this be a possibility?

Idle or lay shaft inside the box is a notrious place for the BM boxes to get noisy, I had a rattly idle shaft for 40K before I got the box rebuilt, Could also be the input shaft bearing. If it's the idle shaft then that should last for ages, if it's the imput shaft bearing then that's a little more dodgy and is expensive to fix as it is the last shaft that is removed from the box. Give it a good, high quality box oil change, though not sure if your's is the lifetime oil G/Box or not.

is the oil something i could take on myself? my trusted mechanic is snowed under and it'll be a few weeks before he can have a look at my lengthening job list.

sounds rather like the release bearing, has this problem in one of my previous cars (non BMW)...but still exactly the same symptoms...

Mansoni...I would certainly agree that it would be the release bearing if it made the noise when the clutch was depressed and then disappeared when the pedal was released, as I have that with my day to day Escort right now but when the clutch is released and in neutral the release bearing is disengaged therefore shldn't be spinning and so wldnt create this noise unless there is something wrong and the release bearing isn't disengaging. The only things that spins when in neutral, trasmission wise, with the clutch pedal disengaged is the input shaft and idle shafts within the G/Box.

BF, draining and replacing the box oil is reasonably straightforward, you need a trolley jack and stands to hoist the front end then spot the drain and fill plugs. Usually a square allan key to fit. Drain and then fill till you can't put any more oil in. The manual will cover this process, though as I said before you may have a box that has recommended lifetime oil and that would need to be confirmed before you went ahead, again the manual should detail this and it may not make any difference.

no bloody manual as usual. in fact, i've rarely had the manual for the car i was driving. people must really hate them to keep throwing them away like that. i should be able to find out though.

i did have a car which made a similar noise in the past. a '94 1.6 integra. the mechanic said he was certain it was the clutch release bearing because he had just finished doing another for his cousin the previous day. the box got a re-build in the end but it didn't cost that much. i'd imagine there's probably a bit more to this box, though.

if i got my mechanic to do the clutch and release bearing would he know with any kind of certainty if the bearing was the root of the problem? i know i shouldn't put it back together if it isn't and i suppose i should be prepared to the layshaft etc. if need be. would that be a blank cheque situation??
