M40? Yeeeuuurrgh! They're suitable as a boat
anchor but not much else. It's all very well 'doing the
cambelt' but what about the £90 worth of rollers that
you MUST change at every belt change? All three of
them!

Plus there's the issue of the cam wearing out, leaky
fuel hoses under the inlet manifold etc etc etc. It's not
a very good engine at all and really best avoided.

The 318 is slightly more powerful and as a result slightly quicker. I think it gets to 60mph about 1 second quicker and will do an extra 5mph. Your best bet is to take it for a test drive to see what you think. To be honest if you're after extra grunt you really need to be looking at a 318is or a 6 cylinder 320/325.

Yeah the 318 m40 has the cam belt but its just been changed and is the second belt change in under 60k miles.

Personally I'd think any small benefits in performance would be outweighed by the cambelt in the M40, which I assume must be an older car than your 1995 316...

I'd look for a 318is if you can manage with 3 doors.

I'm looking at a clean low mileage 318i M40 to replace my 316i M43. I'm just wondering if its worth getting.  Will i notice any increase in power and what is the fuel economy like compared to the 316.  Any advice very welcome.

Mark.
