If you go for a secondhand or ECP make sure you get the right one, the newer version has little bumps across the top and the older ones are all flat. I reckon that your friends one has the bumps on top of the glass. try micksgarage.com

If its just the cover of the lamp that's broken (stone damage, etc), it doesn't need the whole unit replaced.  The cover glass is available seperately.  I got one for the 325i recently and it cost €100+vat from the dealer.  They should be a bit cheaper on Euro Car Parts or similar.

Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Prev:
e46 328i SE Touring, 330Ci, 318Ci.
e39 523i SE.
e36 325i Coupe *2, 323i SE, 316iSE.
