Just noticed a 'grinding'/rubbing noise when crawling along and applying brakes.

On getting out the car theres a nasty burnt smell.

Brakes?

Have a look at the brake disks....if there is a bluish or brown hue to any of them or if the or one wheel is very hot relative to the other/s it'll be binding brakes.

No bluey-brown hue but the smell does seem to be coming from 1 side.....seized pads? could it be seized handbrake shoes (does it have them?)?

Seems to be a lot more brake dust on one rear alloy compared to the other too.

Could be seized pad.....could be handbrake shoe, it does have them.

Jack it up take off handbrake and see how easy the wheel which is building up loads of dust is to spin.

Could be something really simple like broken spring on handbrake shoes.

Lets hope so though I'm not going dealer route methinks.......lets hope its not the calipers and piston!!!

The guy down the road at the brake centre seems to think the discs and pads seem ok so.....................

How can a binding handbrake cause dust on the the alloy wheel...there is no way for the dust to get out onto the wheel, and I think that the handbrake shoes will just wear down after a few 100 miles so that they seat properly... Not the best way to adjust the handbrake, but it will happen...

We'll have to wait for a reply from Stone Island to see what problem was.......

Just got car back, try and explain as best as possible....

handbrake shoe springs nsapped forcing the handbrake shoes into the 'on' position constantly. Handbrake shoes have worn their pad material down to bare metal and the lining on the inner drum accordingly.

Drom been getting red hot as metal grinding on metal, heating disc up and warping it plus heat causes pad to rub (excessive dusting) and finally glaze over.

Outcome; new rear disc and pads plus new handbrake shoes and pad sensors, £315.

Hell...

The only thing that made me think it was nothing to do with the handbrake, was the brake dust! Never occured to me that the disc would heat up, expand and push on the brake pads...basicly meaning that the brakes were always applied ...

Stone Island V8...did you not notice that the handbrake did not work or had reduced effectiveness?

Good job there on the diagnosis Sporty1

When applying the handbrake the car seemed to slip slightly back and seemed to be gripping on 1 side, the other lifted slightly.

Stone-IslandV8...please tell me which side it was that was lifting slightly? Was it the side that was broken (eg: Not gripping) or the opposite side that worked ok???

Would be a great help to my problem

Thanks

Lift and grip on passenger side, problem was drivers side. Had almost guessed from the feel of it that the handbrake wasnt working properly on drivers side.

If its the same then I'd go and see an indy....I'd hate to think what the cost would've been at main dealers!!!!

well i've ordered up new pads, discs, shoes and shoe spring kit and with deals i get locally, all the parts have come to £95, just gonna get them looked at and fitted on wed. hopefully its easy enough to sort out, plus getting the brake fluid changed on thurs, so ideally i can have all the brakes sorted this week, at a nice cost of course,
