I have an E39 528 but doesnt have a multifunction steering wheel, i see theres lots for sale on the likes of ebay and what to get one as i'll find it useful. What i want to know is can I do it. I spoke to BMW and gave them my VIN and they tell me I cant but i'm sure it must be possible. can anyone tell me if this is the case and what parts i'll need? |

Sorry to dig such an old thread up again, but I'd be interested in doing a similar operation on my 98 525tds.
Did you find any further info Jonny? Cheers, Denis |

on a related note, does anyone know if the later wheel from the e39 (post september 2000) can be fitted to an earlier model? i know it wasn't possible on the e46, something to do with dual stage airbags |

Stephen - afaik the same applies. The difference coincides with the late 2000 mods and intro of 525i, 530i, etc.

Bad news mate, didnt get very far. Tried pulling a wiring loom out of a damaged 5 in a scrappy, absolute nightmare, gave up after 6 hrs of chasing it round the car. Sold the wheel in the end and bought a non multifunction Mtec one instead.
Its a messy subject trying to get different wheels to fit your 5. I believe they cahnged the wiring and fitting 3 times in the production cycle so good luck! Edited by jonny 320is |
