I have an E39 528 but doesnt have a multifunction steering wheel, i see theres lots for sale on the likes of ebay and what to get one as i'll find it useful. What i want to know is can I do it. I spoke to BMW and gave them my VIN and they tell me I cant but i'm sure it must be possible.

can anyone tell me if this is the case and what parts i'll need?

It has been done before.

edw520i on here had it done.

Unfortunatly for you it was done here in Ireland.

AutoFix on here did the work.

Mick

Sorry to dig such an old thread up again, but I'd be interested in doing a similar operation on my 98 525tds.

Did you find any further info Jonny?

Cheers,
Denis

on a related note, does anyone know if the later wheel from the e39 (post september 2000) can be fitted to an earlier model?

i know it wasn't possible on the e46, something to do with dual stage airbags

Bad news mate, didnt get very far.

Tried pulling a wiring loom out of a damaged 5 in a scrappy, absolute nightmare, gave up after 6 hrs of chasing it round the car. Sold the wheel in the end and bought a non multifunction Mtec one instead.

Its a messy subject trying to get different wheels to fit your 5. I believe they cahnged the wiring and fitting 3 times in the production cycle so good luck!
