Well done Rhys
Is there a possibility that we have a road politics thread (like the neverending thread) where we can all discuss transport/road related topics?

More bad news for motorists

The Chancellor Gordon Brown has just delivered his budget speech in the House of Commons, and as we feared, there’s more bad news for motorists.

You know you want that Aygo...
You know you want that Aygo...
As predicted, the Chancellor has hit hardest those cars that fall into the top tax bracket based on CO2 emissions. The road tax charges for vehicles in the top category (over 225g/km CO2) will rise to £300 this year, and then to £400 in April 2008.

Petrol duty is set to rise by 2p per litre this year – although the change is deferred until October – with a further 2p rise the following year and a 1.8p rise per litre in 2009.

Performance motoring just became even more expensive.

Well anyone with a band G car, which basically covers most 4x4s and sports cars, is now going to pay £300 rising to 400 next year.

Band F, which covers most of our cars, is only going to rise by £10.

So not to bad for me then but anyone with a 4x4 or an M series car is going to suffer.

Yeah, and band G only affects new cars (reg. 2006 or later I think).

Still, there's a bit of a difference between a 330 and a Hummer, more bands needed IMHO.  Most people's cars are already band F.

Really even £400 a year won't make most people change their cars, just bring in more taxes to be misused.

could be a good selling point in a private sale... much like tax-exempt classics (despite the government freezing the tax-exemption at a specific year instead of their original plan of cars over so many years old )

At least mines a 1.8 and the missus 4x4 is a 1.6 - though that will be going once spruced up (good selling point I think being a 1.6 and not a juice gobbler).

When will it all stop???

but your vitara and compact are more than 6 years old aren't they Rhys?  in which case you've nothing to worry about... it will be £190 a year for 12-months tax (a fiver increase on the current £185) which is applicable to all vehicles registered before 2001, no matter what engine capacity they are or co2 they produce

What you really need is nice runabout which was registered or built before 1st January 1973.... Let's see...

VW Beetle

Citroen DS

NSU 1000, 1200, TT, TTS, Ro80

BMW E3, E9, E10, Neue Klasse, etc.

Rover P5 / P6....

Triumph Herald

Jensen Interceptor

Oh the agony of choice....

It seems inflation has put your penny's worth up to 2p, that'll be the thread closed shortly then..
