A couple of weeks ago someone asked why there was never very much on the 7 series threads.  Well here's a problem for anyone that can help.

A friend of mine, Jim, has an 1997 E38 750 (well of course its an E38 numpty!!! That’s me that’s the numpty!).  It is a beautiful car and it was his car that inspired me to get a 7.

96k miles.

Couple of months ago he found that his battery wasn't staying charged.  The only way to keep the car running was to run it every day.  A new battery was put in.

After a wee bit the same problem resurfaced.  Parked up and unless it was run the next day the battery was flat.

The car was put on a diagnostic system which has shown a fault in the computer / engine management system and it's causing the electrics to drain the battery.  As far as I am aware these computer / engine management systems have a lot of similarities between the models, I think in particular the E38 and E39 were a result of some in-breeding!!!

He's been quoted £1,400 for the bit plus fitting on top, don’t think there would be much change out of two grand.

The final bit of his email to me is "Seriously considering selling it which is a great shame as I love the car as you know - any assistance you can glean will be greatly appreciated."

Any ideas guys?  Anyone want to disagree with the diagnostic system?

He’s at the Hearts side of Edinburgh.

Cheers

Jack
