touch wood i've had no problems or big bills so far (b10 3.3 6-cyl, built july 2000, registered sept 2000, i bought mine in september 2005) - based on a 528 spec-wise, the engine is basically an american-spec m3 3.0 block bored out to 3.3, mahle pistons, alpina mapped ecu and all the usual gubbins, alpina spec head.. blah blah

in other words, it's no more expensive to run day to day than a 528 unless something goes badly wrong with the engine or gearbox, in which case it could be £££, but the same goes for most cars.... have a word with the guys at www.thealpinaregister.com forum; check their downloads section - have a read of the sales brochures and the parts lists (all the stuff that isn't standard bmw stuff is listed)

the 3.3's extreme rarity (only 239 ever produced in total - mines number 118) gives definate "snob value" if you like that kind of thing... good luck

Hmm....

I found myself flicking thru a Parkers guide last night and I noticed that an E38 740i on an 02 plate i.e. the last one made sort of thing is actually cheaper than an E39 540i of the same age.

Makes you think that how much would you continue to loose on it though.

I thought I read somewhere that the 740 is the biggest depreciating BMW in the range.  The parkers even call them a bargain (for buyers but not so good for sellers) but I'm not sure if I want a car that is that big.

I haven't driven one and you don't see that many E38s about full stop but it would be one hell of a car and becoming seriously cheap when you consider size and spec etc.

Those 740i's go OK.  We were out pratting about in our company Demo 328i after getting it back from Birds 2 weeks ago having been fitted with a trick LSD.  The 740i spotted us zooming up behind and we got into a bit of an innocent road sprint where we stayed behind it as he drove the pants off it.

It seemed to handle the city streets quite well at speeds I wouldn't dare think a 7 series would be capable of doing and it pulled OK for a cars of its size.

As you can see I have a 735 (E38) and its so far out in front of any other car I have owned all future cars, that are not E38s, will be a disappointment.

The bigger sports models are apparently the bees knees with all their road hugging equipment.

As for depreciation, you either get the advantage of that when you buy the car or sell the car, only very occasionally can you get both.

750 again a serious amount of car and engine, a V12!, for not alot of cash but I would imagine it has a serious drink problem!

Fancy a V8 purely for the sound, can't quite hear in my head what a V12 sounds like.

Get a 740I and a 318I together. Sit inbetween the two cars and get someone to rev each of them up at the same time...should be something close ... as 8+4=12

sorry beemaboy but sound works in a log rule i dont think 4 + 8 cylinders would quite reach the sound levels of a 12 cyl

There's a chap who regularly visits my next door neighbours who has an 850csi... pity they are a bit ugly IMO, but still alot of car.

Since BMW makes some of the best engines out there, a BMW (or of course Alpina) V12 must be a fab thing.

Bog standard E38 750 will give you 9/10ths for 2/10ths of the purchase price though...

According to the tech blurb the engine is only 3.8 litres but elsewhere it says it is a 6.0 litre. Hmmm

I'm sure I saw one of those about 11 years ago outside a former girlfriends house.
