with the e39. had a blow out in the rear drivers side wheel two nights go at about 80 and the only thing that gave it away was when i said to myself 'the car feels kinda spongy', pulled over and sure enough there was a well burst wheel. the burst was on the inside and a good 8-9 inches long ( i'll post pic later). its just as well, the tyres needed changing anyway.
but have to say well impressed, the car didn't even shudder. this is the 2nd one i've had in the last 3 months. the first was on the new ennis bypass, is it just me or are the catseyes up higher than normal on this road, i get an awful thunk whenever i run over them changing lanes (maybe they hope that with traffic they'll get pushed down in the road?). i think this was the cause of the first blow out, it happened just as i crossed over, might have pinched the edge or something, i don't know. anywho this was on the left front and again had total control of the car at about the 120k mark. unlucky!! Keeping calm and dropping speed gently is key, so give yourself a pat on the back - it isn't all the cars doing. I'd a blowout on the back of the 518i and the 328i at circa 100km/h and both kept pretty stable. I'd a catastrophic blowout on the front of the (non-ABS'd) E34 at 50km/h from someone running into the side of me. It took all I had to swerve back on my side of the road to avoid stationary traffic infront of me (twas a 2 lane at that point), and try stop in time. My point is, throw in a bit of braking and turning and a blowout can cause serious instability at not-so-serious speed. |
