    Posted: 25-June-2007 at 18:24
I picked up one of those DIY refills from Halfords just now as a temp solution to boost the aircon. It has to go into the low pressure valve rather than the high pressure valve. There are two black capped valves in my E39 - one behind the drivers side headlight and the other further back. Which one do I use?

K,

The fitting on the Refill kit will only fit one of them. The one further back not the one behind the light.

Thats the way it is on mine anyhow.

Let me know how that refill goes for you KB. I'm a little sceptical but have heard from one person it's ok so I'd be glad to hear a second opinion.

Mike,

I used it about 3 weeks ago and it really did make a huge difference. It brought my AC back to ice cold.

Did the same to my non-functioning air-con system 2 months back and the initial cooling was excellent. Now it has dropped back but there is still pressure in the system as the air-con kicks in when switched on. Will give it another boost later in the week.

I tried the re-fill kit to see if I could get pressure in the system but it took 2 can's to get good cooling.

Im after putting in the most of a can but as I have no way of telling what pressure is in the system I left it at that. The air is nice and cool now anyhow!

ME too. Got as far as the checkout only to bring it back for the cheaper option. I just  left it connected till no more would go in. (what ever pressure the can was at is what my Aircon is now at.)

I got mine done by a garage recently.  £85 + VAT and it blows out air at 4 deg C!!  The garage also added a considerable amount of oil.  Do these cans have an oil supply built into them with the gas?

These systems need oil in them too to keep the internal parts of the compressor lubricated etc.

How much are the cans?  I remember looking at them in Halfrauds and KB is correct the one with the dial was a lot more expensive but I can't remember how much.

I think it is about €400 for a regas over here. But if the pressure drops again you should get the system pressure tested to find any leaks. The halfords bottles come with the oil i think.

4°C is very cold lads are you sure that is the temp you are getting out.

Yes the cans do come with a mix of oil and gas. About €40 without guage and €80 for the one with the guage.

I asked my mechanic about a regas and he advised me on the DIY jobbie. HE said if there are no leaks then it would be fine. If it starts to warm up again though it might need Pro. attention.

Like everything on my car it has had little use before I got it (bought with 12Kmls after 4 years) and I beleave Aircon needs to be used all the time to stay in good condituion.

I paid €30 (~£25) for the EZ Charge (which I can't see on their site) stuff in Halfords. The bigger bottle with the gauge was twice the price. The bottle did contain oil and IIRC a leak sealer.

Got mine regassed by a man in a van for £60, tho he did say he would have to charge £90 next time because it takes so much gas.  He also supplied me with a cheap new condensor and some hints on diy fitting, so I can reccommend AutoIce UK in St Ives Cambs, top bloke.

They guy we use at work quoted me £60 and said it's this much because BMW's have a bigger system than other cars. The funny thing about this air-con chappie is his real name is John Frost!

The DIY can from Halfrauds is £20 for the top boy one with the oil and sealant. I reckon thats well worth a go!

Cost me €150 to get a pro to fill mine in Oranmore.  Can't think of the guys name; he has a garage beside the cinema in Oranmore.
