Right need some help.
Had to top quite a bit recently with oil but nothing outlandish until last week oil light came on. Needed a good litre last weekend. Checked again today was slightly below min mark so has 'lost/used' a litre in a week . Not normal in 400>450 miles to my mind. Under filler cap also a little mayonaisse type stuff but not a lot (maybe just water vapour from needing a litre?). No sign of oil leak and not losing any coolant or performance. Could this be head gasket? WTF is the oil going? Still under Should i refrain from using till its looked at? Cheers for any advice Edited by Big Stuff |

The head gasket would be my first guess as well. Good job it's under warranty though since a HG is not a cheap job on these engines. |

UPDATE: Garage phoned. No signs of oil and water/ coolant mixing according to them. Little bit of mayo may just have been water vapour. Keeping it overnight to have a look at it cold in morning. Doesn't explain the oil use though! Anybody think doing an oil and filter change wortwhile if they cant find any probs? |

Don't want to start ye old oil debate again but had interesting coversation with service manager when i picked car up.
Basically they have given car full checkover and everything is sweet (quite good getting this done before warranty runs out ). Advice i got was about piss thin oil. Adviced to use 10w40 and change it every 6>8k. Given last service was about 5-6k ago im going to do a change myself in next few weeks. Think its about 10 years since i did a oil change myself but i'm determined to run this car to over 100k so i need to start doing some of the maintenance myself (i.e. at least interim changes between services) Overall im happy the car is in fine fettle and hopefully the oil change will drastically reduce the comsumption Have to say the (indy) garage who i bought it off have been great. |

PM 'Oilman' he'll tell you which one you need. I would've doubted it'd have thin oil in unless it was from a rental company (some put cheapo lawnmower oil in cars they get rid of) or any garage worth it's salt. Infact the garage you bought it from should have given it a full service before they sold it to you, shouldn't they?

With respect to the mayo under the filler cap, I had a similar issue not so long ago which I initially put down to a blown head gasket. However it turned out to be a blocked crankcase breather. This is a system that allows water vapour and oil fumes from the top of the engine to escape tan then be3 mixed with the fuel in the inlet manifold. However if thsi becomes blocked up it prevents the water vapour excaping and causes you to get the water/oil emulsion (mayo) build up on the filler cap and underside of the rocker cover. I cured the problem by removing the 2 hoses running to the crank case breather unit, one goes to the top, the other to the dipstick, gave them a good clean with WD40. I then flushed the breather assembly itself. This was a real bitch to do as you need to remove lots of bits from the engine bay to access it but it has done the trick.

They did and its been changed again once since then as i dont let oil sit in car for ages. The garage involved 'East Port Garage' in dunfermline have been tremendous. They could have charged me wee bit labour for all theve done and checked but havent. Oilman recommends a BMW LLo1 fully synth. However i've been topping up with this and having the consumption mentioned. The garage recommendation is using 10w40 instead which is not BMW's hence the 'debate'. Gonna phone the most respected BM indy in Scotland (Davy @ BM Motors) for his advice. Cheers all for input and advice on this. Mayo was only trace and hasnt reappeared so put down to bit of water vapour. Piece of advice i got on another forum was to take car for a run get it up to temp then give it a thorough caning . Dont this twice now its addictive car seems to be running better than ever. |
