If we're being really picky, I would advise the OP that he was probably correct in his spelling and that he should disregard your advice.

New around here so go easy folks.

I've had 2001 318 for about 18 months and its been drinking oil like amy whinehouse. Go through about 5 litres a month (pretty standard milage 100 mile per week). I have brought it back to the orginal garage and had it looked at by a non BMW specialist too, both said " nothing wrong with it, just likes oil". Surley this must be boll*x? By the way I've changed the brand of oil etc and no difference.

Any help appreciated,

Daragh

Firstly, welcome.  Don't worry, we'll be gentle!

Wow - that's a lot of oil to be consuming.  Its way too much to be just a car that likes a tipple.

Its got to be going somewhere.  If its not dripping out then it has to be burning or mixing with water in the cooling system.  Is it a 1.9 or 2.0 engine?  The 1.9 has a reputation as a fairly robust engine.  There can be a few problems with the 2.0 version but mostly of the valve gear variety.  Neither are reknowned for drinking like a fish.  There can be problems with crankcase breather valves that can increase oil consumption but it still needs to be going somewhere!

I'd recommend getting a specialist to take a look.  I see you are in Dublin.  There are a few specialists that could be recommended by folks on here depending on the part of town you are in.

You mentioned bringing it back to the dealer you bought from.  Was it a recent buy?  Did you get a warranty?  Without naming names, was it a reputable dealer?  Other than saying they can't find the problem, are they taking any other steps to pursue it for you?

Thanks for the reply, Its actually a 320i not a 318, my brother set this up for me (not to keen on computers myself)

I bought from a BMW main dealer in Dublin 6 last year, not sure of the warranty situation as they have said there is no problem with it. I'll check the warranty details later though.

Its a 2.0 by the way. Who would you reccomend looking at it? To be honest I think the dealer I bought it from is just a **** and I will only go back if its for free.

Thanks again.

A common consensus would be for AC Cars just off the South Circular.

If bought from a BMW main dealer within the last 12 months then you have a bombproof/waterproof warranty.  Go back to the main dealer provided you bought the car after April 09.  Obviouslywear and tear isn't covered but part failure is.

BMWs accepatable limit for oil consumption in its 6 pot engines (M52 and M54 variety) is something like 1 litre of oil per 600 or 900 miles which sounds horrendous but sounds like you are getting worse than that.

Be exclusive and drive a Petrol 5 Series!
