I'm not sure if this is the best place for this but since the Z3 is closely related to the 3 series its as good a place as any to start. It seems to me that you rarely hear of any Z3 2.8 having a nikasil problem in the same way that ypu do with other M52 engined cars. Does anyone know if there is a reason for this? The Z's were built in the US and I'm wondering if they might have used a different block on these engines. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in advance! |

I've no idea but you could ask on www.zroadster.net. Plenty of Z3
enthusiasts there. Are you thinking of buying one? |

The 2.8 was available from early days of the Z3, there seem to be plenty of 97P cars around in the UK. |

I sold Mrs D's 318Ci last weekend and I've been looking at possibles. The VRT situation of the 2.8 is interesting (less than a similar age e36 328i Conv). If the engine situation was clear then it would provide more possibilities for a reasonably priced toy. Thanks for the URL, will check that later! |

They're a good car Dergside. (with a proper engine that is) Any of the 6
cylinder ones would be a good buy. That website has loads of helpful info plus it's a good forum for general things like this one. |

Agreed, Zroadster.net is a good resource for Z3 stuff. The 2.8 engine was fitted between late 1997 to 2000 (info from this website), so late '97 must be late into or after the Nikasil problem? There again, I don't think I've heard of one with the problem. p.s. the Z3's model number is E36/7 for the roadster and E36/8 for the coupe Edited by nero |

Just an update for information, based on feedback from the zroadster site, there seems to be a similar level of confusion over there about what the nikasil situation was and when the changes occurred, etc.

Thanks Muppet! I came across both links in my search but still they are a bit vague (in line with a lot of the discussion of nikasil generally) about what changes occurred when, etc. The reason I'm dwelling on it is that the dreaded VRT here in ROI is significantly less for a '97 than, say, a '99 2.8. That, along with the price difference between the cars in the UK means that a '99 has approx a 50% premium over a similar mileage '97 on the road here. Since there are plenty of low mileage and well historied '97's about and its a toy then the plate really doesn't matter much to me if all other things are equal. At this stage though, here, on zroadster and general googling, I haven't found any first hand comment from someone that has had a nikasil engine problem with one (or even someone's mate, etc.). At this stage I'm more curious to find a more definitive answer simply because there does seem to be confusion. |
