I'm not putting the e36 down.. i think they are a brilliant motor, but the 318is engine doesnt do the body any justice... in that shape you need a 2.5/2.8... or the ultimate the M3... but anything below.. ie.. 2.0 or 1.9 is just not powerful enough..

I mean i drive from london to swindon a couple of times a week... bombing it down the M4, and i quiet a few e36's just get left behind... ok there top speeds may be higher... but general driving wise they have to work hard to keep up...

so DAVE28, you reckon its the thermostat? does it mean it's showing a lower temp than it really is? as i said, if im stuck in traffic the temp gauge evtually moves to the middle, but than when traffic flowing again on motorway the temp needles moves back nearer to the blue side...

In the E36 model, were the earlier models less powerful?

I thought originally the 318 was about 115-120bhp then later it went to 140bhp

I have an E36. The first BM I have owned. It is not blisteringly quick , but then again I never expected it to be being a 318, having said that once over 3500 rpm the engine is more than good enough for what I need and is extremely responsive. The main thing I noticed when I first drove the car is the handling. With the m-tech set up it sticks to the road like its on rails , I can not fault it,mind you I havent had a good spin in the wet yet. I beleive the BHP for the E36 is 140 with a top max speed of 133 mph. Not sure about th E36 data. Overall the E36 is a real pleasure to drive.

I reckon an E30 318IS is probably quicker than an E36. The E36 weighs quite a bit more and only has a few more bhp. I haven't driven either car but would say the the E30 is the better car, more fun to drive and more of a classic.

I would say the E36 is quicker as I think it has more power, but it weights more!!

On the temp thing, you need a new thermostat. about £5-10. Mine was £10 from BMW for the 328 - not sure if its the same type of stat for yours.

One more question... is it normal for the car never to heat up, i mean the temp needle never goes much further than the blue bit... but if stuck in traffic, eventually the needle willslowly move towards the centre as the engine is heatin up and stay there, but i've never seen it go past it? Is there something wrong with the temp gauge ? Or all normal?

Hello.. just purchased a H plate 318is.. clean bodywork, 115k on clock with all original usual refinements for £1000... Is that a fair deal? Os did i pay over the odds?

And which 318is is quicker/better? The E30 or E36?
