The forward drive clutch on my recently aquired 6ixer has just given up the ghost, and I need an 4HP/22 4 speed switchable auto for a 635 CSi - the actual gearbox part no is 1043010134 which it seems is as rare as rocking horse s**t. Anybody got one that works that they would like to flog?

Call Andy Howlett at Motormec (01502 500590), quoting the part number you need. He should be able to come back to you with a quote for the genuine part within one working day.

Failing that, I think FAB Direct, the BMW dismantler, may have one or two 4HP22 EH gearboxes on their shelves, as they have been breaking a couple of Sixes recently.

Your success or otherwise in acquiring a complete gearbox from FAB depends on their occasional propensity to sell stuff from under your nose, even if you've "reserved" it.

Got a 1982 635csi wrotting in the garage, which has a build date one day after the change so is series 2. Has a four speed box i think. Drove the car ok into the garage two years ago. You can have this one if it's any good. Still attached to car and engine mind you. Need to get rid of the car, but never seem to get round to it. Send me a private message if you want any bits.

Talk to Quarry Motors in Sheffield - they had a very low mileage E34 535i, same gearbox. Lots cheaper than FAB as well, plus they've got 2 automatic 635CSi's in for breaking.

Since the 4-speed non-switchable gearbox (4HP22) didn't make its appearance in UK until January 1983 (the first examples being built in December 1982), I rather think that you've got a 3-speed on yours!
