some swine has kicked my drivers side mirror off,I have clipped it back on and now the electrics dont work,is there a technique for taking the glass off so I can get to the electrics, as I dont want the glass to break if I have to force it off,thanks in advance, Darren

Darren assumiong that your car is an E30, if you look at the underside of the mirror casing you will see a oblong hole, just above this hole is a white toothed clip that moves from left to right to lock the mirror in place, a small flat screwdiver does the job nicely.

Managed to get the glass out with no damage and connected the wires back up

That's OK then, glad to here you've fixed it.

If the wires had broken I've got a smashed mirror (standard E36 electric one) that you could have had to butcher for bits since you are in York.

Just had to replace mine with a s/h one from Quarry as some burk demolished mine with theirs (resulting in smashed window as well).

Sounds like yours is a different one though being an M3.
