Hi Folks

I realize there isn't too much activity here regarding the e63/64 but its worth a try!

My brother in law has a '04 645Ci conv with active steering.  Its covered around 35k miles and was serviced just prior to Christmas.  The dealer commented that the steering rack is in need of replacement.  I'm just wondering if there is any word out there regarding a problem in this regard on the 6 series.

The car has had a fairly easy life so its unlikely that the problem is down to abuse.  Needless to say, BIL is unimpressed!

Thanks in advance!

Hi D,

Unfortunately I don't have any experience of the big 6 myself but there was a buyers guide in Jan's BMW Car mag.

It wasn't mentioned as one of the potential faults just as something that might not be up everyone's taste. I'm surprised to hear that it needs a new rack but then so did my old 323 at a similar age which cost nearly €2k from BMW.

Time for a new car I think!

I think that might be on the cards soon.  My sister has a 330Ci M-Sport conv already and their mpv is due a change so I think a 7 seater X5 might be on the cards.  Not with the same dealer though.  They have burned a few bridges with him.

I've owned a 645Ci Convertible from new since 2005.

There have been a number of reported incidents of failed steering racks of MY2004 645's.  Mainly in the USA.  It's got to be said the numbers are small, but it sounds like he's bought one of the unlucky cars.

The problems seem to start at around 22,000 miles and appears unique to 2004 model cars.  The 2005 models haven't had any issues reported.  Whilst there has been nothing officially said, it would appear BMW perhaps sorted a problem out that blighted initial cars but didn't manifest until the cars had a few miles under their belts.

If the dealer reports the issue to BMW you might get a degree of sympathy in light of the mileage of the car.  Make sure you let them know that you're aware it is a problem on other 2004 645's.

Thanks Coasting.  Do you know of any websites or forums that might have more info?  I did a google but didn't find much, mostly feedback on the active steering option.  PM the info if you prefer.

Sorry, I'm a bit late in getting back on this one - not been on for a while.

Bimmerfest is probably your best bet.

Update - BMW Ireland have offered a goodwill gesture to replace the rack and sensor.  They will cover parts cost and 80% of labour leaving our man paying 20% labour and consumables such as fluid.  Seems fair enough.
