Hi guys

My dad has a 2001 E46 325Ci and last week he started it and it cut out after a few moments. Since then the engine will turn but not fire, there is absolutely no sign of life from it. The light that says "EML" stays on during this time, but all the other lights go off as normal.

I have a CarSoft interface I bought to use with my 840, so I connected it up and I found this fault registered (the software isn't properly configured, so it shows up in German which I have translated using Google below):

-----------------------------------------------
18  EWS - Signal fehlerhaft / Signal Nockenwellengeber (MS43)

-----------------------------------------------
18 EMS - faulty signal / signal cam shaft encoder (MS43)

From the electronic-Wegfahr backup (EMS) took place at the
Launch attempt no release for the DME.
Check the battery in the ignition key, the connections
At the EMS and the ERM link - DME.
-----------------------------------------------

I cleared the fault and re-tried to start it, and of course the fault code came back. I have told him to try the spare key in it just in case it's a transponder problem with the immobiliser, but I think this is unlikely to be the cure.

Any ideas? I'm a bit confused as to whether the camshaft sensor is showing a problem, or if it's an immobiliser fault based on the fault message. I'm not too knowledgeable on the immobilisation setup on the E46 so any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers
Paul.

DME not getting "Start Release Signal" from EWS.

What codes in EWS?

Not sure. I read them all, but don't remember anything particularly interesting from EWS -- either that or Carsoft returned its old classic of "module does not respond"

I'm going to try and get a decent diag onto it -- MODIC, GT1 or similar. Carsoft is pretty crap IMO.

So true - get GT1/Autologic with someone who knows what they're looking at...
