Hi,

Tried to get an answer from forums everywhere on this but nothing so trying my Irish mates to see if they can help.

I have 9V sitting on the connector to the windscreen washer pump with the ignition off. Switch on ignition and pull the lever and I get the 12V. Now the pump is dead so that needs to be replaced but I'm not sure whether this 9V is supposed to be there at ALL times.  Anybody heard of this before?

Its a 97 523i

Wonder if the 9v would be for the heated nozzles?

Surely the heated nozzles would not be on all the time?

I actually put a multimeter on the nozzles with the ignition off and I got nothing.  I think they work in tandem with the heated window/mirrors but not sure..

How did you measure the 9V?

I got in as far as the pump, removed the connector from the pump and measured it with a multimeter.

I fitted a new pump over the weekend and I'm as surprised as anyone, but the 9V on it didn't rotate the pump.  I would have expected a little movement.  Anyway, cut a long story short, pump is now working fine.  I'm told by the dealer the pump in mine was upgraded in late 97 to a better unit which is probably why mine failed early.  Mine is a July 97 car.  The new pump has a different connector on it so it won't just do as a direct swap.  For that you have to get a new connector also...maybe a harness.  I wasn't going that much into my pockets.

If you still have the old pump... try banging it, they get stuck and wont turn.
Sorry the post is a little too late to save you the cost of a new one.

Thanks Nick...but I tried all that with the old pump.  It looked as if the previos owners used washing up liquid in the windscreen wash and eventually it clogged the pump.

All is well now.
