My fear is that profitabilty will be the key for a private company. I'd guess that we are going to see cameras at speed limit transitions (e.g. coming into villages), at bends, county roads, bottom of hills and all the sneaky places where you could be easily 5kph above the limit but driving safe.
I do not expect this initiative to work in cutting down serious accidents, just like penalty points do not work. The idiots out there who drive like luantics, while drunk/drugged, overtake dangerously, cut up traffic, on the phone, not concentrating, etc., will not change their behaviour - instead it is the majority of punters generally intending driving within the law that will be caught out for realtive misdemeanors. We still cannot learn from others (e.g. the UK and Germany) that having such a simplistic measure on driving standards simply doesn't work. |

I loved the way that they just sat there and watched it burn, and all the other road users just driving past

Sod that, now just seems to be more of a time to go out and buy the most expensive speed camera detector/jammer money can buy. Ive no problem with the theory behind the cameras once they were placed outside schools/at blackspots etc but i would bet my right arm that 90% will end up on motorways/dual carriageways or the usual hiding places for guards as is, i.e. wide open 60kph stretches of dualler. Makes my blood boil when i think of how the average motorist is raped here. At least im young enough to emigrate! Thats always a positive!!

Umm... I don't really know where to stand on this really. As a motorist who rarely breaks the speed limit I'd imagine this would be a good thing. However there is a caveat, I bet that it is the likes of myself that will get stung for the one time in the month or whenever I am doing say 110km/h in a 100km zone.
I am also of the belief that there should be a minimum speed limit and this should be enforced just the same as the max limit. I spent at least 10miles today plodding along firstly behind two Nissan Micras (with the Mandatory L plate) two tractors and an articulated lorry at around 50Km/h in a 100Km/h Zone and it was very frustrating I couldn't pass due to this long cue and visibilty was poor. I do take glee in the fact that at least it is run by a private firm which should mean at least some efficiency and possible accountability. Some people have racked up several points before even finding out under the current system run by the Civil Service where lazy, over paid individuals who wouldn't even be in there only they have some connection with FF. One Step forward yet two steps back. |

Wasn't it Gordon Ramsey who cling-filmed a camera, so that the "damage" wasn't obvious to a casual glance?

I would have no problem in destroying these scameras; it is grossly unfair that the people who pay the most to use the roads are being penalised the most. So the next question is, what would be most effective?
-Expanding foam? -Hammer & chisel? -Spray painting the lens? -Setting them on fire? |

Mmm, it says nothing about saving lives or preventing road deaths.
It does mention "junctions identified by gardaí as being "prone to collisions"", so it's save to assume now that we have loads of cameras to take pictures of collisions. Maybe they should use that €70 million in "revenue"(easy money), to vet the gobsh*tes who know very little about actual driving or of "the rules of the road". The funniest line in that extract has to be this one... "Last year 198,820 motorists were caught for the offence", note the word caught. Edited by irelandoffline |

Revenue collecting in disguise of safety-awareness; I can already see speed-cameras up and down the nation's dual-carriageways and motorways. The figures from Britain on the effectiveness of speed-cameras in reducing road fatalities is inconclusive to say the least. An expected reduction of 20% is ridiculously optimistic. |

"A speed camera working group estimated that the revenue accruing to the Exchequer from speed cameras will be about €70 million." So that will easily pay to fill in all the potholes Now, before you all start to laugh, think about it....... fill in all the pot-holes.... smooths out the road.... increases the average speed.... = more speeders = more money. See! Logic at it's best |

"The cameras will be moved around approximately 600 roads and junctions identified by gardaí as being "prone to collisions". Decisions on when and where to site a camera will be taken by gardaí."
May I suggest that whenever anyone sees one of these new cameras, you use a camera or cameraphone to take a picture of it, and note where and when you saw it. Then send the picture and the details to each of your local TDs, as well as to the minister of justice, asking for details of at least 3 collisions at that spot in the previous 2 years, and see what the response is. |
