Hello

Does anyone know where I can get hold of the SAE 90 hypoid gear oil required for my 325i diff? My local independant specialist will sell it to me for £12.50/ltr +VAT, which is rather steep. Aparrently you can only buy it in bulk.

Thanks!

Tried Halfords - they don't sell the right stuff. They do sell the correct gearbox oil though. The dealers buy it from Castrol in bulk - it's called FXO or something.

My manual doesn't cover Sports or M3s, but if they're like all the rest of the range it should be changed every Inspection II. This means probably every 2 or 3 years.

Ask your friendly BMW Dealer if he will sell you the required amount over the counter, some will, some wont...

Your right, they do buy it in bulk, i'm not too sure what the alternative is if they don't want to sell it to you

Someone left a note on my windscreen. It read 'Parking Fine' that was nice

I got the oil for my diff thro a mate of my dad's that owns a Motorfactors. It was Valvoline SAE90 and came in litre bottles. It wasn't for the lsd tho.

Halfords do Castrol Syntrax Universal 75w-90 which is fine for E30 diffs as long as theyre not LSD's. But id say go to your BMW dealer and they will sell it to you by the litre, i got it for my E36 325i, its called Castrol SAF-XJ(replaced the old SAF-XO) and is now used in all BMW's, old and new. Its a 75W-140 and suitable for LSD's, £24.68 inc VAT for 2 litres.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've decided that, due to the cost of buying the oil and the difficulty of pouring it into the hole (which is even worse for the gearbox oil, which I also want to change) I might as well get the specialist to do it for me this time. It's only the same cost as a tank and a half of fuel.

Changing the gearbox and diff oil is a piece of pi$$ as long as you've bought a length of plastic tubing. With the gearbox you need ~1.5-2ft of 0.5in diameter clear plastic tubing (get it from B&Q). Open the bonnet and run the tube down the o/s of the engine and then just stuff it in the filler hole. Same principle for the diff only you need much less tubing.

Brendan, i've never seen a 2ft length of pipe coming free with a litre bottle of oil.

Who needs 2 feet? There is plenty of space around the diff filler - you do have to crawl underneath!

You need the 2ft for the gearbox tho. It a b*gger of a job if you just try to fit the bottle filler into the fill plug hole.
