No other car in its class is better qualified to meet the challenges of escalating fuel prices, benefit in kind taxation and environmental concerns. With 214hp (157kW) at 4,100rpm, the new D3 Bi-Turbo unit is especially powerful and unusually high-revving with a massive 450Nm (332lbs-ft) of torque from 2,000 to 2,500rpm. As such, the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine is operating in V8 or large-displacement six-cylinder diesel engine territory. The exceptionally smooth power delivery can be enhanced further with the optional SWITCH-TRONIC automatic transmission, with the capability of switching instantly to manual utilising buttons on the back of the steering wheel.

Information on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions according to 1999/94/EG:

  Coupé Automatic Coupé Manual
Fuel consumption, combined: 5,6 l/100km 5,4 l/100km
CO2 emissions: 148 g/km 143 g/km

The D3 Bi-Turbo’s underpinnings are provided by a BMW 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-charged diesel engine with an aluminium block. A  Bosch Common-Rail high-pressure injection systems running at 2,000-bar and untilising Piezo injectors ensures maximum efficiency.

Two exhaust-driven turbo-chargers of different size force-feed the engine. The smaller of the two enables boost from tick-over and helps the four-cylinder yield an impressive 400Nm (295lb-ft) of torque at 1500rpm, reaching peak torque 450Nm (332lb-ft) at a mere 2000rpm. From approximately 3000rpm onward, the larger turbo-charger is fully engaged, enabling the engine to reach a peak performance of 214 horsepower.

Extensive development work and thousands' of miles of testing have resulted in optimised turbo-charger and fuel injection system mapping. The new D3 Bi-Turbo unit revs freely up to 5200rpm, while most diesel aggregates today don't even contemplate past 4500rpm. The base engine’s configuration, as developed by BMW in Steyr, provides the potential to make the BMW ALPINA D3 Bi-Turbo’s extremely high specific output of 107hp per litre possible.

Reviewed: BMW Alpina D3

Quentin Willson, sundaymirror.co.uk 10/08/2008

BMW ALPINA

There aren't many cars that'll do over 150, sprint to 60 in less than seven seconds and return 52.3mpg.

But the BMW Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo is one of them.

The four-pot twin-blown oil-burner produces 214 horses, emits just 143g/km (less than a Fiesta 1.4 Zetec) and costs a relatively reasonable £32,950.

Massive weight savings, including lighter wheels, exhausts, interior and aircon, have wiped 150 kilos off a standard 330d, making the D3 one of the greenest and most economical hot saloons on the market.

Quentin Wilson obviously spent hours doing up that review!

Especially as the D3 is based on the 320d, not the 330d
Entering an age of Austerity and now driving a Focus Diesel.
