All X5's are in the upper echelons of running costs. So pick the engine that best suits your needs. There will only be minimum savings to be had between them all.

ALSO... I'm sure there's plenty of good ones out there that are running fine and will suffer no problems.... BUT the X5 3.0D can have the same turbo issues as the 5 series 3.0D. AND, the X5 3.0D Auto is also suffering monumental gearbox failures. I'll never forget walking into murphy and gunn service garage and seeing two of them up on the lifts with complete drive-train, engine and gearbox in pieces beneath! Mechanic said there were number 4 and 5 that month! Put me off my lunch

I had heard that from my local specialist that early models can give box trouble, in saying that he has a 03' one himself so i guess they cant be too bad.

I am looking into getting a Commercial one myself as a replacement for my Landcruiser and recently drove a facelift Sport and i was very impressed, just like a 530d Sport but up higher and a bigger windscreen! Nice bit of poke too, owner was getting around 28mpg out of it which isnt bad for the size of the thing.
