    Posted: 24-September-2008 at 11:21
I'm going to England this evening (The girlfriend has to drive though !) as she is coming from Thurles and is going to pick me up in Newbridge hopefully between 6 and half past.

My question is this:- We have to be at the Port by 1/4 past 8 and I was wondering what would be the quickest way to get there?

1) Go straight on at the red cow?
2) Go onto the M50 and take the 1st exit into the City? or
3) Go up the M50 and take the port tunnel?

Its just we need the quickest route as we'll probable have just an hour and a half to get from Newbridge to the port.

Thanks for any advice!

By the time you are getting to the Dublin it will possibly be after seven so traffic should have calmed down a good bit (remember that you are going against traffic for most of it).
The port tunnel may be the quickest and handiest if you are not sure of Dublin. The disadvantage of using the M50 is that if there is an incident then you are stuck on it (obviously unless you can get off). You will also have to pay the toll afterwards.

Traffic around the point/east link area can be crap around rush hour.

Tune into DCAL FM on 103.2 (often some decent music on there too!) - this may help you decide. Its the Corpo's live traffic station.

My sister and girlfriend used to live in Killester so I know how to get through the city but I'm just worried about traffic more than anything. I know truckes etc are banned from the city but I don't know what it'd be like traffic wise and also the road works on the M50 after the tolls and like you say Killian if there is an incident on the M50 we could be stuck!

Listen to DCAL on your way up and it will give you an idea of the traffic situation.
Generally though I find traffic to be ok in the evenings (I travel from Stillorgan to Leixlip)

We left Newbridge at half 6 and took the N4 exit off the M50 into the city and got to the port just after half 7 so not so bad. Wouldn't like to have had to try it on a friday though!
