Thermostat and water-pump; well known trouble spots on E36's, and fortunately relatively cheap and straightforward to replace. Good luck. Edit: Bad timing, by the way! Edited by larzyh |

If the temp gauge is moving up to the centre of the gauge but you're not getting any heat then it sounds more likely that there is a fault in the heating system itself. Does the car have air-con?

Don't think its the thermostat or pump. It has air-con. Could it be a airlock? is there any way of bleeding the heating system? |

An airlock would not happen spontaneously. Could be that the valves in or out of the heater matrix are not functioning properly. Do you have the electronic heating system or the rotary buttons? The air-con, per se, is unlikely to be implicated. There is a bleed screw on the radiator housing but unless the system has been disturbed this should not be necessary. |

Long shot but is the dial on the centre air vent turned to cold instead of hot?

This might be worth a shot I've just fix this similar problem with a E36 it was the electronic valve it's on the firewall at the back right ( the passanger side) hand corner of the engine it has two 1/4" pipes going to it and a 2 pin conection it had stopped opening & letting in the hot water |

Would agree with xxcharlie27. The original water valve was replaced under warranty where there was a complaint from owners of E36 models. Thermostat was replaced with a double disc thermostat first. If problem persisted the water valve was replaced with an improved version that is recognisable by having a "caulked" sealing cone. Part Number for the water valve is PN 64 118 391 419 OR PN 64 118 375 792. Found this info in TIS manual, Seems problem developed from start of E36 production through to March 1996 fitted with M42, M43, M44, M50 and M52 engines. Go on ebay and get yourself a TIS manual. Its a bootleg copy on DVD. You wont regret it if you intend to hang onto beemers. |

This happened with an E36 I had and it was just the thermostat - it was stuck or something. Was a quick fix and cheap. |
