I was reversing this morning and the warning beep came on as soon as i selected reverse gear. It stayed on constantly for about 5 - 10 seconds then went off and started working as it should. It has done it several times since. Each time there has been nothing behind the car.
Anybody got any ideas. 2001 E46 320CI Coupe.

Cheers
Dave

David,
my E39 is doing this too.
There was a thread on this a while back.
Suggestions where.
Disconnect battery for 10mins to reset computer.
With ignition on position 2 (car obviously not running)
put car in reverse gear. Put your ear beside the sensors
and you should hear a repeated clicking, if one does not
click then its faulty. It needs to be quiet around you
to hear them.
Let me know how you get on, my sensors are clicking away
happily but have not got round to disconnecting the
battery yet.

Hi
Yes i tried that this morning and one sensor has a weaker clicking sound than the other three so i suppose it will be that one that is faulty.
Do you know if they are easy enough to replace. Are they removed from the fron or the rear of the bumper.
I would expect i will have to get a replacement from BMW.

Anyone know how to get them out? Managed to get the sensor to push in about half an inch but then stops. Tried turning it but no movement.
Its the one nearest the exhaust and can manage to get my hand in to it.

DavieD,
did you manage to get this changed, and was it successful.
I did the disconnect battery thing but nothing changed and
the problem is constant now when in reverse, but the
computer knows there is something wrong as the sounder
stops after a couple of seconds.
I saw some sensors on e-bay for £33

Hi
No haven't had a lot of time to be honest but must get round to it soon. The constant beep the first time you reverse after starting the car is doing my head in. Will have to have a look on Ebay as i grudge paying £75 to BMW.
Will let you know how i get on when i get round to it.

I changed the one on my E38 using a rover one painted matt black, did the
job.

Not sure about your car mate but on the 7 you pull off the bumper trim that
the sensors are located in......

My new E46 is doing something similar. Start the car, select reverse and there's a constant beep for about 5 seconds. Then nothing happens i.e. the parking sensors don't work at all. It's a 320D m-sport but i've never seen the sensors i oprtaion on any E46. Is it just beeps or will there be a visual display of the car?

Also, the other morning i started it and was getting comstant beeping as the dash changed from outside temp of -40 to 50oC. Then after a while it stopped. The temp has been fixed at 50oC for as long as i've had it (1 week)

Any help would be super,

Thanks

Brian

On the e46 its just beeps, no visual, frequency of beeps increasee as you approach object to the rear.  Try the suggestion above re. clicking sound.  If nothing is obvious then hooking it up to a diag code reader should point out the defective one.  Irish spec e46's didn't get PDC as standard until late '03 iirc.  They were std on UK SE and Sport spec cars from around mid 2000.

Sounds like your outside temp sensor has failed too.  AFAIK its located on the NSF low down behind the bumper.  It may just be a dodgy connection or the sensor itself.  Checking wiring for deterioration and any connectors for a little corrosion would be a cheap and hopefully effective place to start.

Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Prev:
e46 328i SE Touring, 330Ci, 318Ci.
e39 523i SE.
e36 325i Coupe *2, 323i SE, 316iSE.
e30 325iSE 2dr, 320i Conv, 320i 2dr, 316i.
