Hi guys, i am new to E30 M3 ownership and new to this forum; decided to register after months of reading the various topics posted. I do have a couple of questions which i would appreciate some expert advise on. First of all when I purchased the car had a faulty fuel gauge. It kept flicking all over the place. Now the gauge is totally showing full. Anybody had the same problem. Secondly the car has standard for the year 225/45/16 tyres on but i do seem to be getting a rubbing from the front passenger side. Again, has anyone else experianced this?

First on the fuel gauge issue, could be that the SI board batteries on your instrument panel have died. These can cause all sorts of gauge fluctuations. These can be swapped out for new rechargeables.

Secondly, the 225/45 x 16 wheel and tyre combo should fit without rubbing. I have the same setup and with some tyres it's fine, with others it rubs. So I suspect all is well (especially if the car drives ok) but you may find different tyres will give slightly larger rolling circumferences, thereby creating a small rub.

Hi,

When you say the tyre is rubbing, is it on full lock when parking etc? as this could be it rubbing on the inner wing protector if it has possibly worked loose.
I know that mine did very slightly but was rectified.
I'm sure in conversation with one of the specialist garages (cannot remember which) I was told that alot of people remove these as it is a common issue. Hopefully someone can shed some more light on it for you.

Phil

thanks for that. Like i said the car has been in my possession for about 1 month now. It has had an inspection from a specialist and has mentioned a bit of play in the ball joints with the replacement needed eventually to the control arms. Otherwise it could be the tyres as it did have a new set of Avons put on at the weekend. One thing i do notice and it could be my eyes but i do notice that the wheels do not sit exactly in the middle of the arches. there is a slightly larger gap between the wheel and the front of the wing and the rear.  All new stuff to me as previously was a owner of a E36 325i coupe. The cars are worlds apart.

With the question asked by Phil it is happening at low speeds when parking, not necessary at full lock though so must be just the lining? Cheers

One other thing, if the AVONs are ZZR or something, beware in the wet!

had a scary experiance in the wet with the car straight away. taught me a lesson. only dry road fun from now on. I am from the North Kent area and had experiances with both Bexley motor works and hartlake. are there any other specialists who look at these cars?

That's normal. If your car was built before 1988 you probably don't have the eccentric controlarm bushings at the front. These put the wheels a bit more into the middle and do some other good things with the suspension upfront (don't remember from the top of my head).

Anyways 225/445 should never rub, never... so something is amiss..

Regards,

Adwo

The wheels do sit back in the arches, looks odd if you look at the car in profile, but it is right, so don't worry.

You really shouldn't be having scary moments in the wet, these are very good in the wet, excellent balance means they are a lot more grippy than the 6'er's.

Bexley's are close to you, any reason you don't want to use them ?

hmm... well you will be hard pressed to find an E30-M3 driver here who does not swear by Bexleys, good luck if you risk going elsewhere.

In what way were they not helpfull?? It could be that you caught them when they were really busy?
Like Tom says, most of us use Bexley's, Nigel and Jagg's are brilliant blokes - allways helped me out. Could just be a one off??

Congrats on the car by the way, seeing as your in North Kent, can I ask if you bought the car locally??

James

Bexleys are generally very good , I live fairly local to them and they do most of the work on my car. The first time I used them I did ask for new braided brake lines to be fitted at the front and to drain the old brake fluid and refill with all new stuff. When I picked the car they had fitted new OE lines and had only topped-up and bled the fluid, not what I asked for but nothing to bad and i was only charged for what they did . Other than this they have been great since and always on hand with plenty of free advice and help .

If you are in North Kent you could also try Geoff Weeks at ETA Klassiks ( 07974 912139 ) in Meopham near Gravesend . I generally split any work I need doing between these two as its handy to have two people you can trust with your M3 . I would say if its more tuning work that you require then Bexleys would probably be the better bet .

Probably caught them at a busy moment then .  With reference to your question James i bought the car in Twickenham. Got a good price for it, it has needed a bit more work than expected by the saving has compensated that. Had looked at one in the strood area but bodywork was a bit ropey in places.  So do any of you guys on here use Hartlake. That is where both my BMW's have been going upto now. Found that they have been excellent but now with this car being a bit more specialised just was putting the feelers out to who else is out there. BMG: thanks for the information on ETA Klassiks
